As a 16-year-old high school student, I believe that certain positions of authority, like a school board member, should prioritize the values and well-being of all students without pushing an agenda that may not be appropriate for young minds. While I respect people’s right to live their lives as they choose, I don't believe a gay pastor should serve on a school board because of the potential influence on our education system, particularly when it comes to issues like gender identity and sexual orientation.
Firstly, the role of a school board member is to focus on providing a quality education without introducing personal agendas that could blur the lines between education and advocacy. We are in a time where the “woke” agenda, which focuses on identity politics, is becoming increasingly pushed into schools, and it can distract from important subjects like math, science, and history. Schools should be a place where we focus on academics, not a place to promote personal lifestyles or political views.
Furthermore, when we talk about “grooming,” it’s important to recognize the influence adults in authority have over young minds. The school board, especially in younger grades, holds a responsibility to protect students from content or ideologies that they may not be ready for, or that might go against their family’s values. There’s a difference between teaching tolerance and pushing a particular ideology, and I fear that having a gay pastor on the school board might lead to the latter. A pastor, by nature, is someone who has strong beliefs about morality and identity, and it’s hard to separate those beliefs from the decisions made on a school board that impacts hundreds or thousands of students.
I’m not against anyone for their personal beliefs, but when it comes to schools, we need to make sure the focus stays on providing an education free from controversial agendas. Schools should be safe spaces where students are taught to think critically and not be pressured in
