We recently attended the inaugural Napa Valley Housing Solutions Summit, hosted by Generation Housing. While no single approach will solve the housing crisis, the event highlighted the importance of bringing diverse voices to the table to address one of Napa Valley's most pressing issues. Thoughtful discussions, innovative ideas, and a shared commitment to expanding housing opportunities made for a productive and insightful gathering.

The Santa Rosa-based housing advocacy nonprofit Generation Housing brought a grab bag of potential solutions to Napa County’s housing challenges at its first Napa Valley Housing Solutions Summit.

The people who make Our Town St Helena. Meet OTSH Board President Polly Ogden.

Strong nonprofits are guided not just by mission, but by leaders who believe in it. Polly helps steward the vision of OTSH with clarity, care, and a deep commitment to this community. She has served on the OTSH board for nearly four years helping address the growing housing shortage in St. Helena, a place she has called home for decades after first visiting the valley in 1977.

Why Housing Is a Community Investment in Health and Beyond

Affordable housing is one of the most powerful investments a community can make.

Research shows it:
• Reduces ER visits and healthcare costs
• Saves thousand of dollars for the taxpayer per housed person annually
• Improves long-term health and stability

And beyond the data, it changes lives—supporting better health, education, and opportunity. Affordable housing isn’t just crisis response. It’s infrastructure for a healthier community. May is Affordable Housing Month! We’re proud to join national and regional partners in highlighting the importance of affordable housing and raising awareness of the solutions that strengthen our communities.

Affordable housing is:

Community → so our neighbors can live where they work and be involved in their community
Impact → because affordable housing efforts are making a real difference in Napa Valley
Stability → because housing security supports physical and mental health and economic opportunity

In our region, median home prices approach the mid-$900K range, and many households still struggle to find housing within reach of their income. In St. Helena, OTSH is continuing to advance local affordable housing efforts, including a long-term goal of 105 affordable homes by 2035.
