๐จ FBI Alert: Internet Crime Just Hit a Major Milestone (And Not a Good One)
The FBIโs Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) just released its 2025 report, and for the first time in history, they received over one million complaints in a single year.
Here are some sobering takeaways that we all need to see, especially here in our community. Here is what is happening in the world of digital theft:
1. "Investment" is the New Front Line
Investment scams might only make up about 7% of reports, but they account for over 41% of all dollars stolen. These aren't just "bad tradesโ this is organized crime using unregulated crypto and human-trafficked call centers to systematically drain bank accounts.
2. Crypto is the Primary Weapon
For the first time, more than half of all stolen money (54.4%) was taken via cryptocurrency. Itโs the preferred method for scammers because itโs fast and incredibly difficult to reverse once itโs gone.
3. Our Seniors are the Primary Targets
The data shows a heartbreaking trend. Victims over the age of 60 are bearing the brunt of these crimes:
โข 68% of all money stolen in Romance Scams comes from seniors.
โข 60% of all money stolen in Tech Support & Government Impersonation scams comes from seniors.
4. Itโs Not "LostโโฆItโs STOLEN
We often hear people say they "lost" money to a scam. Let's call it what it is: Theft. The average victim in these categories saw $38,500 stolen. That isn't a mistake; it's a crime.
How can we fight back?
โข Report everything: If you or a loved one is targeted, file a report at IC3.gov. Reporting is the only way the FBI can track these syndicates.
โข Stay Skeptical: Government agencies will never call you demanding payment via crypto or gift cards.
โข Talk about it: Scammers rely on the "shame" of the victim to keep them quiet. By sharing these numbers, we take away their power.
Letโs keep our community safe. Please share this with your friends and familyโespecially those who might not be following the latest tech news. Knowledge is our best defense! ๐ก๏ธ
