Today, the Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR, honors the birthday of Eugenia Scholay Washington (1838–1900), one of the founding members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

A descendant of the Washington family, Eugenia Washington was a passionate patriot, historian, and preservationist who helped establish the DAR in 1890. Her vision and dedication helped create an organization that continues to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism more than a century later.

As DAR members, we are grateful for her leadership and the lasting legacy she left for generations of women who have followed in her footsteps.

Today, the Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR, honors the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures whose love, guidance, and example help shape future generations.

Whether they taught us the value of hard work, service to others, love of family, or devotion to country, fathers have played an important role in preserving the values that strengthen our communities and our nation.

On this Father's Day, we celebrate and thank the men who have made a lasting difference in the lives of their families and those around them.

🇺🇸🌿 Members of the Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR were honored to attend the commemoration of the 248th Anniversary of the Battle of Alligator Creek Bridge in Callahan, Florida.

Hosted by the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution, the City of Callahan, and the West Nassau Historical Society, the event recognized an important Revolutionary War battle fought in Florida on June 30, 1778.

As we continue celebrating America 250, we are proud to help preserve and share the stories of the Patriots whose courage helped secure our nation’s independence.

🇬🇧3 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNERS were held at the fort in 1780 in St. Augustine, Florida during the American Revolution! The British imprisoned Thomas Heyward, Jr., Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge. Britain controlled St. Augustine from 1763 to 1784.

The three men were prominent South Carolina Patriots captured after the British siege of Charleston in 1780. In total, British forces exiled 63 prominent Patriots to the loyalist stronghold of St. Augustine in East Florida. They were held until July 1781. While some prisoners were kept strictly inside the fort (then also known as Fort St. Marks), the signers were allowed to live under house arrest in the city, with records placing them near the current site of Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of King and St. George Streets

🇬🇧That’s right, a British flag flew over the Castillo de San Marcos 250 years ago when the United States celebrated its independence on July 4, 1776!

🇺🇸 Florida became a territory in 1821, and officially joined the USA in 1845.

As we reflect on this important moment in our nation's history, we honor the resilience, courage, and hope of those who endured and celebrate the enduring promise of liberty for all.

The Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR is honored to be featured in the St. Augustine Record for our efforts to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary and promote our chapter's mission of historic preservation, education, patriotism, and genealogy.

The article highlights our new America 250 initiative, community partnerships, educational programs, cemetery preservation projects, support for veterans and first responders, and the many ways our members serve St. Augustine and St. Johns County.

As we approach our nation's Semiquincentennial, we are proud to celebrate America's story in the nation's oldest continuously inhabited European-established city. Thank you to our members, community partners, and supporters who make this work possible.

Today, the Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR, commemorates the 251st Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775.

Although technically fought primarily on nearby Breed's Hill, this pivotal battle demonstrated the determination and courage of American Patriots early in the Revolutionary War. Facing a powerful British force, colonial soldiers stood their ground and proved that they could successfully challenge one of the world's strongest armies.

The battle is remembered for the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for the cause of liberty and for the famous reminder to conserve ammunition: "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes."

As we approach the 250th anniversary of American independence, we honor the Patriots whose courage helped lay the foundation for the freedoms we enjoy today.

🇺🇸 Yesterday, members of the Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR, were honored to participate in a moving Flag Day ceremony hosted by our local VFW and the Ancient City Riders.

The Ancient City Riders collect worn American flags from all 50 states and ensure they are retired with the honor and dignity they deserve. Those participating in the retirement ceremony received a certificate containing a star from a retired American flag—a touching reminder of the sacrifices and service represented by our nation’s banner.

We were also privileged to view an impressive display of American flags that had flown over significant locations, including the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, and sites honoring our police officers, firefighters, and first responders.

It was a powerful ceremony filled with patriotism, respect, and gratitude. The tremendous community support demonstrated the enduring love Americans have for our flag and the freedoms it represents.

Thank you to the VFW, the Ancient City Riders, and all who helped make this meaningful event possible.
