"My name is Deriona and I attend Saginaw United High School. Being part of the Youth Council has taught me about local government, like what responsibilities are up to the city governments, and what parts are up to the state and federal government. It also keeps me informed on what's happening in the city. If a parent wants to know what's going on, I can tell them because I know what's going on, and I know what's next."

"I joined the Saginaw Youth Council because I really wanted to know how the City Council changes the everyday lives of Saginaw citizens, and I wanted to know if I can make a change myself. I really want to make a program where parents are educated on how to raise their children, and so I thought joining this program could help me achieve that goal.

We learn about how the local government functions. It's also helped me see that City Council members aren't 'just politicians'. They're people and regular citizens, and that has gives me a closer connection to my local government."
