Credit to In August 1982, Vanity 6 released what would be their only studio album. The trio was Denise Matthews (Vanity), Susan Moonsie and Brenda Bennett. Recorded in the summer of 1982, the project was produced by Prince under his alias The Starr Company, with some members of The Time as musicians. Prince wrote every track except He’s So Dull.

The iconic single Nasty Girl followed in September 1982 and secured the group’s place in Minneapolis funk history. In August 1983, Vanity left the group and was replaced by Apollonia Kotero. The band was reformed as Apollonia 6 and Apollonia took Vanity’s role in Purple Rain.

Fun fact: Brenda Bennett was married to Prince’s lighting and set designer Roy Bennett, and she had worked as Prince’s wardrobe supervisor before stepping into the spotlight.

In 2016 Producer Kevin Feige explained that the character was included “because we needed a third party. We needed fresh eyes who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers and who has a very different point of view than either Tony or Steve.”

T’Challa is in the “beginning phases of taking on” the Black Panther mantle, and appears in more than a cameo, with a full arc and character journey with “his own conflict and his own people that he’s looking out for.”

Boseman did not audition for the role, instead having a “discussion about what [Marvel] wanted to do and how I saw it and what I wanted to do.” T’Challa is torn between needing to live up to traditions and the legacy of his father and Wakanda, and how things need to happen in the present.

Boseman developed the Wakandan accent himself, and used it during the entire production “whether he was on camera or not”, while the Wakandan language was based on the Xhosa language, which Boseman was taught by John Kani (who plays T’Challa’s father T’Chaka).

The Black Panther costume is a combination of a practical costume and visual effects, featuring a vibranium mesh weave similar to chainmail.

Costume designer Judianna Makovsky called the Black Panther costume “difficult” since “you needed sort of a feline body, but it’s hard and practical at the same time. You needed a feeling of some sort of ethnicity in there, but of a world [Wakanda] we weren’t really creating yet, so you didn’t want to go too far and say too much about that world.”

Additionally, Makovsky felt creating T’Challa’s royal look was “a bit of a challenge”, avoiding African robes after learning actual African royalty are generally “educated in the West [and] get dressed in Savile Row.”

Sylvester or Sly as he became known, was the second of five children born into a devout Pentecostal family. Growing up, hearing and singing gospel songs along with family was ordinary. Sly’s sister Rose was also born in Texas in 1945, but when brother Freddie came along in 1947, he was born in Vallejo, California, where the family had moved to settle.

Sly and Freddie had started their own bands, but would merge their efforts and become known as “Sly and The Family Stone.” With their sister Rose, they are credited for perfecting funk, creating and developing a style of psychedelic music that pioneered the fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia and gospel through the 1960s, and into the 1970s. By 1993, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Credit to 🙌🏿 was going on that night had to be REAL. 😤😉

I know this excerpt comes from circa 1981 footage from a Rick James concert in Long Beach, California, during a tour leg that Teena Marie opened for. Since she also dueted with Rick on “Fire and Desire” from this then-latest hit album ‘Street Songs’, she’d also come out during his show to sing it with him. This is part of that song, though this segment is obviously adlibbed and not part of the original recording. Apparently they were dating at the time and took whatever was going on offstage to the stage.

While I’ve seen this footage before, I’ve never seen it this clear with picture and sound restored. Rick James doesn’t get enough credit for being the most popular Black artist during the early 1980s period between Michael Jackson’s ‘Off the Wall’ and ‘Thriller’ albums. And Teena Marie (yes, she’s white) has always been one of my favorite artists of all time. I anxiously await a forthcoming biography about her by which I know once and for all will help solidify and demystify her legacy as an R&B great.

: “When Rick and Teena performed Fire 🔥 & Desire the audience witness more than just a duet. The connection made their chemistry undeniable a duet that will live for generations to come.”
