CWA is putting in the dirt work at San Jacinto Wildlife Area. 🚜

California Waterfowl is leading a major effort to upgrade, enhance, and expand habitat across the area. 🦆

Work is underway in the Walker Units to refurbish levees, reestablish swales, build new islands, and improve grading—all designed to use water more efficiently while creating better wetland habitat. 💧

Better water management. Better habitat. More waterfowl.

🦆 Grizzly Island Restoration Project – Part 4

At California Waterfowl, we don’t just advocate for healthy wetlands—we put the work on the ground to restore them. 💧

At Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, our team is improving critical water infrastructure across 450 acres, giving CWA biologists greater control over how water moves through the wetlands.

Better water management means healthier, more productive habitat for waterfowl—and better public hunting opportunities for the people who enjoy and support these lands. 🦆

It’s an important part of the hands-on wetland restoration work CWA carries out to improve habitat and hunting opportunities across California.

This project is funded through a Wildlife Conservation Board grant in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and implemented by California Waterfowl.

In one of the Klamath Basin’s toughest water years, collaboration is making a real difference for wildlife.

California Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited are applauding the agencies, Tribal Nations, farmers, ranchers, irrigation districts and conservation partners who came together to secure critically needed water for Tule Lake and Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuges—helping protect more than 100,000 ducklings and flightless molting waterfowl while laying groundwork for a more durable, balanced approach to water in the Basin.

California Waterfowl has officially launched Heart of the Flyway - a bold campaign to secure California’s waterfowling legacy.

For generations, hunters have been at the heart of conservation in the Pacific Flyway. Now, CWA is building on that legacy by restoring critical wetlands, strengthening local duck production, expanding hunting opportunity, investing in science and advocacy, and opening the Pacific Flyway Center to the public.

Through Heart of the Flyway, CWA will work to protect, restore, enhance, and manage 130,000 acres of wetlands and waterfowl-friendly working lands - while leading the charge for the habitat, access and hunting traditions that define this state.

🦆 Grizzly Island Restoration Project – Part 3

CWA removes invasive Phragmites, an important step in restoring 450 acres at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. This aggressive plant can crowd out beneficial wetland vegetation, restrict water management and reduce habitat quality for waterfowl. 🌿

In this video, crews are mowing and carefully burning Phragmites. Mowing removes dense stands, while controlled burning clears the buildup of cut vegetation. Used responsibly, fire is an effective wetland management tool that helps create space for beneficial plants and improves future habitat management. 🔥💧

The result: healthier wetlands, better waterfowl habitat and improved public hunting opportunities. 🦆
