Our work is guided by a vision to end the generational cycle of trauma and homelessness. For 30 years, we have provided nearly 30,000 homeless women and children with the essential tools to rise above the devastating, negative elements of poverty and achieve improved health, job-readiness and self-sustainability. Founded in 1985 on the steps of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento, we have expanded from an emergency shelter that provided a roof and a meal to 20 women and children into an immersive 18-month residential, continuum of care program supporting up 200 women and children every day. Saint John’s operates the largest residential employment training program in the Sacramento region, and the only one focused on serving homeless women and children. Our program's comprehensive array of 'dependence to independence' services for homeless families, all under one programmatic roof, is unparalleled in the region, as well as the State, based on research completed by Sacramento's Center for Strategic Economic Research. Dedicated to the eradication of homelessness, a deep commitment is required of each woman entering Saint John’s. While sobriety is strictly mandated, this 18-month comprehensive program includes mental health therapy, alcohol and drug counseling, parenting education, budgeting classes, healthy relationship training, and in a landmark approach to helping these individuals re-enter the mainstream, each woman must participate in Saint John’s Employment Training Program at one of our three social enterprises, Plates Cafe and Catering, Plates MidTown and First Steps, where the women build work ethic and on-the-job training skills in the restaurant and daycare industries. We accommodate up to 550 women and children each year with 675 hours of comprehensive services each month. 96% of Saint John’s job training graduates secure unsubsidized employment, a crucial step in their journey to self-sustainability. As Saint John’s focuses on the root causes rather than the symptoms of homelessness, clients are able to break the cycle, learn how to become independent and make a life-long positive change.

World Cup energy made its way to Saint John’s! ⚽️

A huge thank you to Street Soccer USA for coming out to campus as part of their monthly visits with the children at Saint John’s. More than just a game, soccer gives our kids a chance to run, laugh, build confidence, make new friends, and simply enjoy being kids.

For children who have experienced the stress and instability of homelessness, poverty, and trauma, moments like these matter. They bring joy, connection, encouragement, and a reminder that they are seen, supported, and celebrated.

We are so grateful for partners like Street Soccer USA who help create positive, healing experiences for the children and families we serve. 💛⚽️

Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder of what Real Change looks like.

Through Saint John’s Female Community Reentry Program, Jessica found support, stability, and the tools to begin building a new future for herself and her family. Her journey reflects the strength, courage, and determination of the women we serve every day.

At Saint John’s, we believe every woman deserves the opportunity to heal, grow, and create lasting change.

Watch Jessica’s story and see the impact of second chances. ❤️

Yesterday was a special day on campus!

A heartfelt thank you to Bertha Gorman and the Coalition of 100 Black Women for visiting Saint John’s and donating brand-new books for the children in our program. We are also so grateful to The Sacramento Literacy Foundation for helping make moments like this possible.

At Saint John’s, childcare is so much more than supervision. It is a place where children are safe, nurtured, encouraged, and given meaningful opportunities to learn and grow while their mothers work toward stability and real change.

Every book placed in a child’s hands opens a door to imagination, confidence, connection, and possibility. And we believe every child deserves the joy of having a favorite book, the comfort of a bedtime story, and the special memory of their mother reading to them each night.

Thank you to these incredible community partners for investing in our youngest learners and helping build a love of reading that can last a lifetime. 💙📚

Celebrating Jinea, who has just paroled and is stepping into a new chapter of freedom, hope, and possibility.

At 24 years old, Jinea was sentenced to 21 years in prison. For years, she struggled with addiction, loss, and cycles she didn’t know how to break. But through her own courage, commitment to sobriety, and the support of Saint John’s, she began to rebuild her life from the ground up.

Jinea shared that Saint John’s gave her structure, stability, accountability, and most importantly, hope. She learned how to sit with her emotions instead of escaping them, take responsibility without drowning in shame, and rediscover who she truly is beyond her past.

Today, Jinea leaves incarceration not defined by her mistakes, but by her strength, growth, and determination to keep moving forward.

This is the work of Saint John’s: walking alongside women as they heal, rebuild, and create lasting change for themselves, their families, and their futures.

We are so proud of you, Jinea. Your story is a powerful reminder that transformation is possible.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our Guest Chef Dinner in support of the women and children of Saint John’s. It was a beautiful evening of community, connection, and generosity, all in support of helping families build brighter futures.

We want to give a special thank you to Patrick and Bobbin Mulvaney for their long-standing support of Saint John’s and for helping keep our Guest Chef Dinners going strong throughout the years. Your continued commitment to our mission means so much.

Thank you to Chef John Trujillo of Mulvaney’s B&L for working hand in hand with the women of Saint John’s and crafting such an incredible menu for the evening.

We are also deeply grateful to Heringer Estates for hosting us for the third year in a row and generously donating such a beautiful space to make this event truly special.

And thank you to Patrick Harbison for emceeing the evening and for continuing to champion the clients and families of Saint John’s.

Breaking cycles of poverty, trauma, and homelessness takes a community, and together, we are helping one family at a time.

Today is the day! Big Day of Giving is here. 💙

At Saint John’s Program for Real Change, we believe cycles of trauma, homelessness and poverty can end and every day, we see women and children proving that transformation is possible.

For so many families, Saint John’s is more than a place to stay. It is a safe space to heal, rebuild, grow and begin again. When a woman finds stability, her children inherit a new story — one rooted in hope, freedom and opportunity.

Today, you can be part of that story.

Your Big Day of Giving gift helps provide shelter, childcare, behavioral health services, case management, workforce development and the wraparound support women and children need to create lasting change.

Give today and help us reach our $40,000 goal for the women and children of Saint John’s.

Donate now: https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/organization/Sjp

Together, we can help end the cycle.
