Today Nancy Wong and Jackie Cheung attended the funeral of 15 year old Emily Her—one of our Li Family Charitable Foundation grant recipients who had medulloblastoma. Just days after receiving the grant, Emily passed away. In the wake of that loss, we felt called to provide an additional grant to support her family with funeral expenses.
As we sat there listening to the speeches, watching the slideshows, and witnessing the love surrounding her, there was a profound sadness. Being in that space with some recent deaths already on our minds wasn’t easy.
But in the midst of that sorrow, two truths settled deeply in our hearts.
First, life is not measured in years, but in impact. In just 15 years, Emily’s life touched people in a way that many never do in a lifetime. Her presence, her spirit, her feistiness, and her story will continue to ripple far beyond her time here.
Second, grief does not require permission or proximity. It is human to feel, to mourn, and to be moved—whether you knew someone deeply or only briefly. To feel sorrow is not weakness; it is a reflection of love, of empathy, of connection.
Today was a reminder that life is fragile, that love is powerful, and that the legacy we leave is not in how long we live, but in how deeply we touch others.
May we live with greater intention, love more openly, and never take a single moment for granted.
Rest in peace, Emily. We send our ❤️, strength and condolences to her Mom Salina Chang-Her and all of Emily’s family & friends. 🙏❤️
