Terrell C. Gladney Memorial Academy In Loving Memory of Terrell C. Gladney (5/10/00 - 3/10/08).

Started as a tribute to our son, our angel, the program has grown each year as a symbol of the life and hope that the children in our community bring. The Academy uses social interaction and hands-on activities and learning as a foundation and conduit to provide young leaders life tools to be positive contributors to their community. With a curriculum that is adaptive to the needs of the scholars, we focus on personal growth through goal setting, planning, and action.

Tough post, as Ryan exited the competition in the quarterfinals this morning, finishing tied for 79th. One letter may decide the fate in the competition, but cannot uncrown a champion. Congratulations Ryan!

As I shared with him, and all the spellers, I, nor TCG Memorial Academy, are here without the young scholars. They carry their excellence in the present, they carry the past as they honor and uplift Terrell; and they are creating the future, as they show all of our Sacramento scholars that we belong on this stage and trailblaze for future scholars to follow in their paths. We are immensely proud of all three of our Sacramento Region CHAMPIONS.

Now it’s time to get back to work to ensuring we continue to provide and grow opportunities for all of our scholars in this space, and every space, so they can have fun, learn, grow and re-seed in our community and the world.

As we continue the work, we also acknowledge and uplift the importance of our scholars creating and maintaining balance, and are excited for them, and us, to fully immerse themselves in Washington, DC and all of the art, culture and humanity here, and also engage in the balance of the spelling bee experience and support all of the remaining competitors. 😊

We are live at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee! Mixed results for our TCG spellers in the first session, with an early start of 8am here (5am back home):

Ryan ( #25) advances through Rounds 1 (Spelling) and 2 (Vocabulary); Kai ( #26) eliminated in Round 1 missing a tough French word by one letter; Priya advances through the spelling round but eliminated on a vocabulary round that included a definition for a near-homophone.

They all competed with poise and represented our region well! Ryan will carry the torch for TCG and the Sacramento Region as he takes a written test this afternoon in an attempt to advance to the quarterfinals.

Let’s give all of our spellers a huge round of applause and love for making us Sacramento Proud!

Despite a perfect record, the Pony team missed out on the finals, being eeked out in a tiebreaker with other undefeated teams.

Most importantly, however, they represented themselves, their families, school, community and our TCG and NorCal organizations with an amazing display of brilliance, teamwork and sportsmanship. We are proud of them and excited for what their futures hold as they finish 6th grade in the coming weeks and move on to middle school. Today we made history, hosting the 1st Annual SCUSD Community Schools Spelling Bee at Oak Ridge Elementary School. Kai Johnson of Theodore Judah Elementary School was crowned Champion, and will be our first-ever SCUSD scholar to grace the Scripps National Spelling Bee stage.

The event showcased the brilliance of SCUSD scholars, and the tremendous power of the SCUSD village, as families, teachers, administrators, staff and students filled the room with love and care for each speller representing campuses from across the SCUSD landscape. This opportunity would not have been possible without the leadership and support of the SCUSD Community Schools Department, who funded enrollment for EVERY eligible SCUSD school, including traditional and charter, that made today a reality. Their team, led by Coordinator Saralyn Bienvenue, curated a beautiful experience for all, including lunch, decor and the most amazing level of hospitality imaginable that made every singke individual in the space feeling welcomed, valued and loved, truly establishing a community of fellowship.

THANK YOU to our officials! Our Pronouncer was Past SCUSD Board President Gracie Phillips, and our all-student judging panel included our inaugural Capital Spelling Bee Champion and Runner-Up Nithika Rangan and Connor Doherty; and SCUSD Student Advisory Committee member Owen Naqica, all of whom nurtured the scholars with love and care before and throughout and competition.

Additional thanks to Board Trustees April Ybarra and Michael Benjamin; Oak Ridge Elementary School and Principal Tiffany Whelden, who volunteered to host one year ago at our Regional Competition; .co for providing another amazing set of awards; for once-again providing a natural, high quality product for all of us to enjoy; .culinaryarts for borrowing the buddies and minds of our spellers with a healthy, nutritious breakfast, and for introducing our families to her wonderful children's literature series.

It took two years, but it is fulfilling to have a vision manifested, and we are driven to continue to create this experience for our SCUSD and other district scholars in the future.
