Joan Rose Foundation

Joan Rose Foundation Education and Community Development project in Haiti pragmatically nourishing the potential in every child.

99% percent of donations benefit the children directly: healthy lunch, teachers' salaries, medicine, medical procedures, clothing and shoes, and school materials. Because we have no administrative expenses, each dollar gifted to the Foundation goes entirely towards helping the children. At the start, Esperanza's neediest children were identified with the help of local schools and community council

s. Then, Foundation staff conducted home visits using a checklist of static poverty indicators to determine level of difficulty faced by the child. Over time, children in the area have become interested in the foundation through word of mouth. Kids show up to the foundation doors and if they can show real desire and commitment over the next few weeks, then they are officially accepted as a student. Upon entrance, some children may require a medical examination. Most require parasite removal and receive other medications and medical procedures as necessary.

*The average child gains 7 pounds within their first 2 months.*

CIRCUMSTANCES UNIQUE TO JRF:
-Students are enrolled in a variety of classes that meet their individual needs, but most are academically delayed.

-Haitian Creole is the first language of a majority of students, but all are taught in Spanish speaking classrooms.

-Life as a "street child" requires fierce independence but does not normally allow for comprehensive emotional care from trustworthy adults.
