On July 28th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 75 officers.

Detective James Biello of the Atlanta Police Department in Atlanta, Georgia, died from gunshot wounds sustained on April 15th, 1987, while working a secondary employment job at a restaurant.

An armed juvenile entered the restaurant and announced a robbery. As the subject had an employee remove money from the cash register, Detective Biello approached him from behind and identified himself. The subject turned around and opened fire, striking Detective Biello in the chest and abdomen. Detective Biello was able to return fire, wounding the subject who then shot him in the neck and fled. As the subject left the scene another officer fired shots at him. The injured suspect was arrested a short time later.

Detective Biello's wounds rendered him a quadriplegic and he was confined to a wheelchair. On July 29th, he died from complications from the original gunshot wounds.

The subject who shot him was convicted of aggravated assault and armed robbery and sentenced to 60 years following the initial incident.

Detective Biello had served with the Atlanta Police Department for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a brother.

On July 27th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 74 officers.

Police Officer Juan Diaz of the Los Angeles Police Department in Los Angeles, California, was shot and killed shortly after midnight after taking law enforcement action when he observed several men vandalizing a wall.

Officer Diaz was eating with friends when he observed the subject tagging a wall with gang graffiti. He approached the subject and told him to stop. A short time later, the subject returned with others, confronted Officer Diaz and his friends, and brandished a handgun. The subject then opened fire on the group as they tried to leave the area, killing Officer Diaz and wounding his girlfriend's brother. Three subjects were taken into custody approximately one week later and charged with murder and gang participation.

Officer Diaz had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for just 2 years.

He is survived by his mother, father, and two sisters.

On July 21st, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 73 officers.

Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Nimtz of the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to a domestic violence.

Deputy Nimitz's patrol vehicle collided with a pickup truck in the intersection. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Deputy Nimtz had served with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for just 16 months. He was one week from resigning from the department to move to Indiana.

Deputy Sheriff Nimtz is survived by his wife and two children.

On July 18th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 71 officers.

Sergeant Mike Stephen of the Stone County Sheriff's Office in Mountain View, Arkansas, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic incident at a home.

Sergeant Stephen was talking with a female in the front yard when another subject opened fire, striking Sergeant Stephen and the woman. The subject who shot Sergeant Stephen was found dead by responding deputies.

Sergeant Stephen had served with the Stone County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. He also served as chief of the Pineville Fire Department and had previously served with the Arkansas Department of Correction. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife.

On July 7th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 70 officers.

Conservation Officer Opie Barron of the Red Lake Nation Conservation Department Tribal Police in Red Lake, Minnesota, suffered a fatal heart attack while investigating an illegal harvesting call.

Officer Barron and other officers had just cleared from the call when he radioed dispatch requesting EMS for himself. The other officers returned and immediately began performing life-saving measures. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Barron had served with the Red Lake Nation Conservation Department for 19 years.

He is survived by his wife, two children, and aunt who raised him.

On July 7th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 69 officers.

Deputy Sheriff Nicholas Dixon of the Hall County Sheriff's Office in Gainesville, Georgia, was shot and killed following a vehicle pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle was believed to have been connected to several burglaries and car break-ins over the previous days. A vehicle pursuit started when deputies attempted to stop it. Multiple suspects then fled on foot after the vehicle crashed. Deputy Dixon pursued one of the subjects and exchanged shots with him. Deputy Dixon was fatally shot during the exchange and the subject was seriously wounded. A second subject was apprehended approximately eight hours later while additional subjects remain at large. One of the men who was taken into custody was charged with murder.

Deputy Dixon had served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office for only 3 years.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

On July 6th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 68 officers.

Deputy Sheriff Omar Diaz of the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Houston, Texas, died after collapsing at the scene of a stabbing call.

Deputy Diaz and other deputies had responded to the scene where a woman had been stabbed several times. Deputy Diaz was securing the crime scene with police line tape when he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital where he passed away a short time later.

Deputy Diaz had served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife and young daughter.

On July 4th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 67 officers.

Police Officer John Anderson of the Metro Nashville Police Department in Nashville, Tennessee, was killed in a vehicle crash.

The vehicle that struck Officer Anderson had just fled from other officers who attempted to make a traffic stop on it. The officer terminated the stop when the vehicle fled and did not pursue it. Officer Anderson was en route to assist on an unrelated call involving a pedestrian on the interstate when the fleeing vehicle ran a red light and struck his patrol car. Officer Anderson's patrol car became engulfed in flames. The passenger in the fleeing vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries. The juvenile driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was charged with vehicular homicide.

Officer Anderson had served with the Metro Nashville Police Department for just 4 years. He was was a U.S Marine Corps Reserve veteran.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, his father and step-mother, his 18 month old son, brother, step-siblings, grandparents, and his girlfriend.

On July 2nd, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 65 officers.

Deputy Sheriff Carlos Ramirez of the Kendall County Sheriff's Office in Boerne, Texas, was struck and killed by a vehicle while he and another deputy were conducting a traffic stop.

Another vehicle struck Deputy Ramirez and the other deputy before striking the vehicle that had been stopped. Deputy Ramirez died from his injuries while the other deputy was seriously injured.

Deputy Ramirez had served with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office for just 3 years. He was a U.S. Army Reserve veteran.

He is survived by his wife and two young children.

On June 29th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 64 officers.

Detective Luis Alvarez of the New York City Police Department in New York, New York, died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

Detective Alvarez is survived by his wife, three sons, mother and father, and three siblings.

On June 25th, we lost another American hero bringing the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in our country this year to 62 officers.

Deputy Sheriff Troy Chisum of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office in Lewistown, Illinois, was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call.

Deputy Chisum was shot by a subject who then barricaded himself inside the home. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody without incident the next day.

Deputy Chisum served with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office for 4 years. He also served as a paramedic with the Fulton County EMA and as a member of the West Central Special Response Team.

He is survived by his wife.
