Residents United Network - RUN

Residents United Network - RUN Resident's United Network builds power among people living in (or eligible for) affordable housing.

Roughly one million people in California live in apartments and houses with affordability requirements of some sort. These residents represent a potential political force that, if organized, could significantly advance advocacy for housing and healthy communities in our state. In early 2013, representatives of nonprofit affordable-home developers, resident-service providers, and a variety of advoc

acy organizations held a series of meetings to discuss the vision and reality of developing a first-of-its-kind, statewide resident base of power in California. These meetings resulted in the creation of the Residents United Network (RUN), which was unveiled in April 2014 at Housing California's Annual Conference.

* Who: Affordable-home resident and community leaders, frontline resident staff, developers, and advocates (Facilited by Housing California and Center for Community Change)

* What: A new model of collaboration and empowerment for healthy communities, with a focus on affordable homes, through training/leadership development

* Where: Statewide

* Why: To engage affordable-home residents in the decisions that affect the health and stability of their lives and communities and harness people power as a political force in order to influence policy and budget decisions at the state, regional, and local level. Our vision: A California where citizens of low- and moderate-income communities are actively engaged as a powerful political force to advance
housing affordability in both state and local political and policy making arenas. Our ultimate goal: A place to call home in a healthy community for everyone in California.

"Laws that make it a crime to live on the streets give police a license to target unhoused people. These laws do nothing to address skyrocketing rents. They do not produce or preserve affordable housing. They do not protect people."

The fact is the police have no role in solving homelessness. Police officers are not service providers. Police budgets don’t pay for long-term housing.

Since the '90s tenants have organized to defend public housing. This highlights the vital role of public housing, and why we should advocate for its expansion.

Since the 1990s, Los Angeles has been privatizing its public housing even as its residents repeatedly organize to defend their homes. That organizing demonstrates the importance of public housing β€” and why the Left should demand we build more of it.

Today we celebrate & reflect on the fact that not one minimum wage worker earns enough to afford housing. That's why we're working to make sure every Californian has a safe and stable place to call home.

At today's Community Care Call we shared our thoughts about the stigma that the unhoused community faces. We also debunked common myths surrounding homelessness, including the idea that the only presentation of homelessness is someone in living in a tent on the street or sleeping on a park bench. Members reiterated how people who are couch-surfing, living in their cars, and young people leaving the foster-care system may also identify as being unhoused. RUN organizer Robert gave a crash course on criminalization as it relates to the unhoused community.

We also celebrated accomplishments of our fellow RUN members:

-Idalia N Rios was nominated as a representative to Santa Ana's Community Development Commission
-Maria Elena Maria Elena Sulin Hernandez was appointed as a board member at Community Housing Works
-Verna Ekpeduma Verna Erby-Ekpeduma was selected to receive the first "Resident Leadership Award" at Mutual Housing's Building Up fundraiser

Thank you to all of our RUN members for your perspectives and participation as we collaborate to work together to find housing and homelessness solutions. We look forward to seeing everyone at next month's Community Care Call!
