ASYA PLESKACH
Asya was only 18 years old when a tragic car accident took her life and that of another driver in February of 2003. A 2002 Cordova High School graduate and former member of the Sacramento Master Singers, Asya was a talented and promising young vocalist and music student at American River College. After Asya and her family immigrated to the United States in the mid-1990's, she began singing in the Bethany Slavic Missionary Church and in the Cordova High School choral program. Asya also spent two summers at the prestigious Young Musicians Program at UC Berkeley and had recently sung in the opera chorus at Capitol Opera Sacramento. Asya was working towards transferring to San Jose State as a voice major. I had the honor of being Asya's private voice teacher for a little over a year. She was eager to learn and was a fearless performer. We had just completed a lesson the morning before she died and we had chatted about how excited she was to be driving down to Southern California that evening to visit her boyfriend. I take great solace that she was in a very happy place that day. It was only two months later that we created this scholarship in her name to honor her memory and to help support other promising young singers. Tina Harris

Did you know that in California, the state Education Code mandates that the visual and performing arts MUST be taught in grades one to 12? Here is a chance (grades 7-12) to make a 2 minute video to show WHY the arts matter and to ask your school board to adopt the STUDENT RIGHTS TO ARTS LEARNING DECLARATION.

The Declaration highlights that arts learning – which includes dance, music, theatre, and visual and media arts – is an essential part of a comprehensive education for all students. If arts education matters to you, you can advocate for it to be included in your school’s budget!

By entering the Student Voices Campaign, you are making YOUR VOICE heard in YOUR SCHOOL! Learn more at

All students deserve to have the arts! A quality arts education leads to success in college, career, and life (it’s true – there’s tons of research to back it up!). Yet some students – maybe you? – experience barriers to access, participation, and success in arts learning. There are real inequities…
