Drungo Hazewood

There was no one quite like Drungo Hazewood. Known more for his football prowess, Drungo was ticketed for the University of Southern California where coach John McKay was salivating over the idea of having the pride of Sacramento High School share a defensive backfield with a new recruit named Ronnie Lott.

But the Baltimore Orioles stepped in, selecting Drungo in the first round of the 1977 draft. Drungo would spend 7 seasons in the Orioles chain, mostly with Charlotte, smashing 591 hits and 97 home runs. He became a big leaguer for 5 games in 1980, and scored one run.

Drungo is remembered by his teammates and friends as a loyal family man with more athletic talent than anyone around. Bill Conlin, a Sacramento Baseball HOF writer said of Drungo: “He has too much ability for one human being, he should have been born twins!”

We are excited to welcome Drungo and his family to The La Salle Club Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame on January 17 at Christian Brothers High School!

F.P. Santangelo was an All-City shortstop for Oak Ridge High School in 1985, leading the Golden Empire League with a .456 average. After a disappointing, albeit a brief stop at the University of California, Berkeley, F.P. found solace and success at Sacramento City College under Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame coaches, Jerry Weinstein and Paul Carmazzi. In 1988 F.P. led the Panthers to the State Championship with a .395 average, 32 RBIs, and 43 stolen bases. He was named the co-player of the year.

Taking the “Weinstein Pipeline” to the University of Miami, F.P. would hit .345, fueled by 71 hits while swiping 32 bases. Drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 20th round, F.P., would sock a triple down the left field line in his second career at bat on August 2, 1995.

F.P. would play 14 seasons in professional baseball with 7 years in the big leagues where his career average was .245 with 87 doubles.

Always ready with a quote for the writers and blessed with a sunny disposition regarding anything about baseball, F.P. was a natural for the broadcast booth, serving tenures in San Francisco and Washington DC. He is currently back with the Giants broadcast team and hosts a popular Giants-themed podcast.

F.P. is looking forward to catching up with his former teammates and friends at the 69th annual Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame at Christian Brothers High School on January 17, 2026.

Rick Schu was born in Philadelphia and retained his Phillies allegiance while prepping at Del Campo High School. The two-time All-City infielder hit .411 with 10 doubles and five triples and won seven games with a 1.85 ERA to round out a dominant senior year.

Drafted by, you guessed it, the Philadelphia Phillies in the amateur draft of 1981, Rick quickly rose through the Phillies chain and made his debut at Veteran’s Stadium in 1984 replacing his boyhood idol Mike Schmidt at third base.

Rick would go on to play 9 years in the majors with stops in Philadelphia, California, Baltimore, Detroit, and Montreal with 386 hits, 41 homers, and 134 RBI’s. He would play two years in Japan, and overall spent 38 seasons in professional baseball.

Rick’s knowledge of the game helped him secure the hitting coach role for the Diamondbacks, the Nationals, and the Giants. Rick retired recently, after spending nearly 27 years in professional baseball. We look forward to honoring the splendid career of Rich Schu at the 69th Annual Sacramento Baseball Hall of Fame at Christian Brothers High School on January 17th. Pat Esposito

The only baseball coach that Granite Bay High School has ever known is a guy from Queens, New York by the name of Pat Esposito. Since 1996 Pat has built the Grizzlies program into a regional power based on college placement. Although Pat loves it when players continue their baseball careers, he is just as pleased to see former players graduate with degrees and give back to the community.

Like so many coaches, Pat was a catcher at Cal Poly where he could see the whole field in front of him. His coaching career began at Santa Clara High School in 1987 where he was 47 and 21.

After various stops at Oakmont and Woodcreek, he was hired at Granite Bay where within 5 years his team would win a championship. The 2001 Granite Bay team was 21 and 0 in league play and 30 and 1 overall, netting Pat coach of the year honors.

In 2022, the Grizzlies would once again win the Division II championship, and his overall record at Granite Bay is an impressive 483 wins to just 316 defeats.

Pat’s coaching career will rightfully be remembered and highlighted at The La Salle Club Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on January 17 at Christian Brothers High School.

Don Porter

Don Porter was one of the youngest players in the history of the Negro League when he took the field for the New York Black Giants in 1957. His teammates called him “Rook” and the name stuck.

He would also play and barnstorm for the Indianapolis Clowns in 1958 during the waning years of that historic league. Don’s uncle, a 20-year Negro League veteran, inspired him with the stories of the great players of that era of baseball.

After military service, Don moved to Sacramento in the early 1960s and resumed his baseball career in the highly competitive county, winter, and night leagues. In 1968, Don played in the first game at Harry Renfree Field and socked 2 hits for L & L as they beat Rainbo 9 to 8.

Don has attended and has been feted at the annual Negro League game played here in Sacramento that honors the past and seeks to inspire the future of young black and brown athletes to play baseball.

The “Rook” will be in attendance to don his jacket at The La Salle Club 69th Annual Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on January 17 at Christian Brothers High School.

Steve Brown

Steve was the first graduate of UC Davis to make the big leagues. The tall right-hander with a nasty slider was such a force in the Far Western Conference that he was eventually enshrined into the UC Davis Athletic Hall of Fame and the Aggie Baseball Hall of Fame.

Drafted by the California Angels in 1978 and signed by legendary scout Loyd Christopher, Steve made his major league debut in 1983 joining Sacramento Baseball Hall of Fame members manager John McNamara and pitcher Ken Forsch. He would go on the clock 57 innings in the big leagues with a record of 2 and 3 and a 4.58 era. Ken’s minor league record, mostly in AAA, was an impressive 80 wins against only 65 defeats over 7 seasons.

Steve was very active in the night leagues and the winter leagues, but became a star attraction pitching for the Sacramento Smokeys where he teamed with Sacramento Baseball Hall of Fame members Timothy Busfield and Butch Metzger to anchor a strong staff for manager Larry Manuian.

Steve is looking forward to seeing his former teammates on January 17 at his induction into The La Salle Club Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mike Fischlin

Elk Grove has provided the Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame with some memorable inductees from Buck Martinez to Ken Hottman. Inspired by them, young Mike Fischlin was the team captain and an All-Conference shortstop for the Thundering Herd his senior year.

Under the guidance of coach Jerry Conway at Cosumnes River College, Mike made All Conference on the field and the honor roll in the classroom. Conway anointed the slick fielding shortstop as the next Mark Belanger.

Mike was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1975 and went on to have a 10-year major league career defined by his defensive adroitness at every infield position.

Mike was one of the first players signed by Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame member Scott Boras and would later go on to work for the powerhouse Boras Cooperation as the Head of Player Development.

Today, Mike gives back to the community by staging “Fisch Camps” for the rural kids in his adopted home in Greene County, Georgia. He goes through his vast address book and invites former teammates and clients who spend the afternoon with the kids who receive lunch, drinks, a hat, and a jersey for just $25.

Mike is traveling from Georgia for The La Salle Club Sacramento Area Baseball Hall of Fame dinner on January 17 and is looking forward to seeing the people of Elk Grove, former teammates, and his many friends.
