Culture through Cloth

Culture through Cloth Make. Wear. Learn. A community studio placing paj ntaub and traditional textiles into people’s hands.

05/07/2026

Traditional art isn’t only from the past. It’s being made right now.

Threads of Belonging brings together three women working in HMong paj ntaub, Ilocano kusikus, and Palestinian tatreez — honoring the legacies of immigrant communities through the textile traditions they carried here.

If you joined us at last week’s fundraiser, you felt it: the bonds this project has built, between artists and between everyone who showed up to our free workshops and open studios.

Sacramento is in a spirit of giving today — and we’re asking you to help us reach our $10,000 goal. Every dollar supports the artists’ time, installation and permitting, and the two years this work will live at Valley Hi–North Laguna Library.

We're bringing the making process out into the community — and into one of Sacramento's newest restaurants!

Come spend a Saturday afternoon at Meza California, a fusion Mexican + Arab restaurant we love, while we weave the Tatreez panels of the Threads of Belonging mural right there in the space. Palestinian artist Ren Allathkani will be leading the weave-along.

Stop by to grab food, learn about Tatreez and the mural project, and show some love to Meza. If you want to stay and weave with us for the full session, we encourage you to register — but if spots are full, feel free to come by anyway and try your hand at the patterns.

📅 Saturday, May 16th · 1:00–3:00 PM
📍 Meza California · 1415 16th St, Sacramento, CA 95814

Register for a weaving spot or just come through: https://tinyurl.com/tob-tatree

We’re still glowing. 🌿✨

Last Thursday, folks showed up — and we felt every bit of it. Our Meet the Artist event brought in $3,000 in community support, and more than that, it gave us the chance to share our heart and hustle with the people who make this mural matter.

To everyone who came out, donated, cheered us on from a distance — thank you. This is what culture through cloth looks like in real life 🧡

We have an update to share before tonight — our original panel host is unfortunately unable to join us due to illness. We wish her a speedy recovery and are so grateful for her support of this project! 🤍

We are thrilled to welcome Azizah Amhad as our new host for tonight’s Meet the Artist event! 🌿

Azizah is an immigration lawyer, educator, and daughter of Southeast Asian refugees whose path to law was shaped by the realities of deportation in her own community. She currently teaches at UC Berkeley Law while helping Bay Area residents access immigration relief — work that is as personal as it is powerful.
With over a decade in public policy, Azizah has partnered with national health advocacy organizations, civil rights groups, NGOs, and government agencies to advance equity for underserved communities. Beyond her professional life, she is a proud and active member of the Cham community, where her dedication to cultural preservation and social justice runs deep.

We cannot wait to have her voice in the room tonight. See you soon! 🧵

Pro-tip from Bridgétt: You should probably drink more water. It really does help with everything. 💧

Meet our apprentice Kathryn!

She's a design student from and has been with us since Fall 2025, learning how to make paj ntaub, assisting with workshops, and weaving the HMong "house" pattern for the mural.

Kathryn thinks Threads of Belonging is an exciting way to interact with culture hands-on. "It's not an intense process and feels very natural and calm to partake in, with an important community aspect!"

This week she helped us finish our second paj ntaub panel. Thanks Kathryn~

Congrats to our winner with the top votes, Bibi Vang!
