A Coast Guard rescue swimmer credited with saving 165 people during the deadly July 4 flooding in the Texas Hill Country was awarded the Legion of Merit for "extraordinary heroism" during President Trump's State of the Union address.

In a moment that brought the House chamber to its feet, President Trump said Petty Officer Scott Ruskan was reunited for the first time with an 11-year-old girl he saved.

It is with deep sorrow that the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Sergeant Jason Whelen, who suffered a medical emergency while on duty on Tuesday, February 24th.

Despite the immediate response and extensive life-saving efforts by fellow deputies and medical personnel, Sergeant Whelen tragically passed away.

Sergeant Whelen began his career with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office on October 15, 2007. Through his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service, he was promoted to Sergeant on February 25, 2013. Throughout his career, he served this community with honor, integrity, and compassion.

Sergeant Whelen was a proud husband and devoted father of four. He was known within the Sheriff’s Office for his kindness, steady leadership, love of Jesus Christ, and infectious smile. He brought positivity to those around him and was someone who could always be counted on.

Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a respected leader, a valued partner, and a cherished member of our law enforcement family.
