Ghadari Baba Jwala Singh Kalirai aka Jwala Singh Khankhana (c.1880s - late 1950s)

Ghadari Baba, farmer, and President - Educational Society Khankhana California. Left Khankhana for America c.1905-1912, farmed in Stockton/Lodi. Proven alive in 1944 from Farmers & Merchants Bank of Lodi records. Returned to Khankhana post-WW2.

He showcased his haveli with the rare do-mukha khuh (double-mouthed well) in Khankhana - a showcase for the whole pind of what a Kalirai farmer could achieve abroad.

Family: Son Mehnga Singh Kalirai, Grandsons Kher Singh, Tarlochan Singh, Jatinder Singh.

ਖਾਨ ਖਾਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਖਾਨਖਾਨਾ — ਉਹ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੇ ਘਰ ਜੋ ਗ਼ਦਰੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਜਵਾਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ
ਇਹ ਹੈ ਜਵਾਲਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ — ਉਹ ਘਰ ਜੋ ਗ਼ਦਰੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਜਵਾਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਾਨਖਾਨਾ ਨੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਪਸ ਆ ਕੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ।
1908 ਦੇ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਉਹ ਏਂਜਲ ਆਈਲੈਂਡ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ।
ਸਟਾਕਟਨ ਇਲਾਕੇ 'ਚ ਵਸ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਠੇਕੇ 'ਤੇ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਆਲੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੈਂਕ ਖਾਤਾ ਲੋਡੀ ਬੈਂਕ 'ਚ ਸੀ।
14 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 1912 ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਸਹਿ-ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਸਟਾਕਟਨ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਮਿਊਜ਼ੀਅਮ 'ਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ 'ਤੇ ਸਾਫ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ — "ਬਾਬਾ ਜਵਾਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਾਨਖਾਨਾ"।
1923 'ਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਮਿਡਲ ਸਕੂਲ, ਖਾਨ ਖਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖੀ।
1927 ਤੋਂ 1932 ਤੱਕ, ਐਜੂਕੇਸ਼ਨਲ ਸੋਸਾਇਟੀ ਖਾਨਖਾਨਾ, ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ 'ਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ 600 ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵੀਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ $11,399 ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਲਈ ਭੇਜੇ। ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਰਕਮ ਲਗਭਗ $600,000 ਜਾਂ 5 ਕਰੋੜ ਰੁਪਏ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
1930 ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ 'ਚ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਾਪਸ ਆ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਇਆਂ 'ਚ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਫੋਰਜਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰ 'ਚ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਵਾਪਸ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਲਈ ਗ਼ਦਰ ਲਹਿਰ 'ਚ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਰਹੇ।
ਆਲੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਫੋਰਜਿੰਗ ਤੱਕ।
ਖਾਨ ਖਾਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਟਾਕਟਨ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਰਾਇਆਂ ਤੱਕ।

From Khan Khana to California to Khankhana — The School and House That Gadri Baba Jwala Singh Built.

This is JAWALA NIWAS — the house Gadri Baba Jwala Singh Khankhana built after returning from America.

Around 1908 he sailed through Angel Island to California.

Settling in the Stockton area, he leased acreage used primarily for potato farming.
He did his banking with Lodi Bank.

On October 14, 1912, he co-founded the FIRST Sikh Gurdwara in America.
His framed photo hangs in the Stockton Gurdwara Museum today — clearly labeled "Baba Jawala Singh Khankhana."

In 1923 he founded Khalsa Middle School Khan Khana.
From 1927-1932, as President of Educational Society Khankhana, California, he raised $11,399 from 600 Punjabi donors in America to fund it. (In today’s currency that would resemble $600,000 or nearly 5 crore rupees).

In the early 1930s he returned to Punjab and invested into a metal forging business in Gorayan, Punjab.

Even after returning, he remained active in the Ghadar Movement for India's independence.
