Our goal is to create awareness for Type 1 Diabetes (Juvenile Diabetes), educate people about it, and to raise money for the research for finding a cure. Team Hudson's History:
Lianna Landahl was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes eight and a half years ago at the age of 11. After many days of going back and forth from the camp infimary, her counselors decided that she needed to be taken to the hospi
tal. On the drive home from the camp, Lianna's parents met half way so that they could go to the ER. At that point Lianna was so weak that her dad had to carry her from the counselor's car to theirs. Lianna's parents described her as looking like she had just come from a concentration camp because she was so pale and had lost 10 pounds, bringing Lianna to a total weight of 55 pounds. When they arrived at the hospital, Lianna was sent to the ICU. It was then that the doctors diagnosed her because she had a blood sugar level of 680 when a normal level is 130. They told her parents that if she hadn't have gotten to the ER when she did that Lianna would have been dead by midnight that night. Team Hudson was then formed in 2009, 3 years after Lianna's diagnosis, when we first started doing the Walk to Cure Diabetes. The team was named after Lianna's insulin pump, Hudson. On our first walk, Team Hudson raised around $500. In 2010, we raised $1,214, which passed our goal of $1,000! The next year, in 2011, Team Hudson was able to raise $1,653 towards our goal of $2,000. In 2012, Team Hudson once again hoped to raise $2,000. They reached this goal and actually raised $2,923.70! In 2013, they raised a total of $2,421.53 and then in 2014 they raised $1,365.22. Over the last 6 years, Team Hudson has raised a total of $10,082.45!!! This year will be Team Hudson's 7th walk and our goal is to raise $3,000! Each year's walk is exciting because we know it is getting us closer and closer to the cure! The money Team Hudson raises will go directly to support this life-changing research. About JDRF, T1D, and the Walk to Cure Diabetes:
JDRF, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is an organization that is the farthest in the research for a cure than any other organization worldwide. They raise money for the research through many different fundraisers, such as the Walk to Cure Diabetes! Our Northern California Inland Chapter is located here in Sacramento. For more info, go to www.jdrf.org. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an auto-immune disease where a person's immune system attacks and destroys all insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that converts all the sugar (glucose) we eat into energy for the body to use. T1D is a disease that CAN'T BE PREVENTED and has NO CURE! So even though Lianna has an insulin pump, she will still be living with this disease for the rest of her life. The walk is one of JDRF's main fundraisers. The walkers do their own fundraising which all goes to JDRF to be used for the search for better treatments and a cure. The actual walk is a celebration of the walkers hard work and an awesome way to show support for all the people living with T1D as well as their family, and friends! If you have any questions, would like to find out how you can help, or need support, feel free to talk to Lianna! You can email her at [email protected] or message her here on Facebook!
