Parent Teacher Home Visits

Parent Teacher Home Visits Building trust, accountability and capacity between schools and home for student success.

The Parent/Teacher Home Visit Project is an inexpensive and easily replicated model of family engagement that has been proven to end the cycle of blame between families and school staff by building trust and respect, instilling cultural competency and increasing personal and professional capacity for all involved. The increased communication, trust and support between families and teachers via hom

e visits result in:

- Increased student attendance rates.
- Increased student test scores.
- Decreased suspension and expulsion rates.
- Decreased vandalism at school site. Home visits also provide a positive opportunity to meet federal and state mandates that families be meaningfully informed of their child’s academic standing. This model began in Sacramento, California but has since been adopted and adapted by schools and districts in eleven other states.

Good morning from Long Beach! Our team is leading a pre-conference session at the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference, and we could not be more excited to share this one.

"From Listening to Collaborating: The Enduring 'How' of Parent Teacher Home Visits" goes back to our roots, to the listening conversations led by parents, educators, and community organizers that gave birth to this model. More than thirty years later, those founding commitments still shape everything we do: voluntary participation, reflective practice, and deep collaboration across families, unions, and school systems.

If you're at the Institute for Educational Leadership conference and want to explore what trust-centered engagement actually looks like in practice, come join us. Room 201, Long Beach Convention Center, 9 AM–12 PM Pacific.

And if you're following along from home, stay tuned. We'll be sharing highlights throughout the conference. 💙

Recently, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) hosted a PTHV Celebration at Severn Run High School's Division of Professional Learning & Organizational Advancement Office, which included group reflections from educators, a passionate address about by Alba Morales, School and Community Specialist in the Office of Equity, and a powerful reminder about the danger of a single story from AACPS's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Maisha Gillins! We're proud of this district's efforts and cannot wait to see how their use of the PTHV model continues to benefit students, families and educators.

“Doing the home visit with Trustee Nicolet in the fall and then a spring transitional home visit with the principal of where my child will go to Kindergarten, made me feel like I could say things that were on my mind, make comments, and suggestions freely. Plus, seeing my suggestions materialize throughout the school year let me know my voice was being heard. I am so happy.”
