Make a Difference This Election Season 🔴⚪🔵

Election Day, November 3rd, is quickly approaching! ✍️ In a year when voting rights and mail-in ballot security are top of mind, Family Resource Centers that are 501(c)(3) nonprofits can help support full community participation in our democracy.

Nonprofits have more room to engage than many realize, from sharing voter registration info, to running nonpartisan campaigns, to increase voter turnout, encouraging early voting, and offering nonpartisan voter guides and candidate forums. There are also lines to keep in mind, like not endorsing candidates or supporting campaigns directly.

🎉 A Win for Prevention: Sacramento County Restores Funding for Birth & Beyond! 💛

We're excited to share some wonderful news out of Sacramento County! 🙌 On Tuesday, September 8th, the Board of Supervisors voted to restore funding for Birth & Beyond, one of our valued FRC network members, after a proposed budget cut threatened their services.

📣 This outcome didn't happen by chance, it was the result of powerful, coordinated advocacy.

Birth & Beyond Staff, families, and partners, including The Child Abuse Prevention Center, showed up in force. They attended the budget hearing in person, submitted public comments, spread the word, and supported families to share their own experiences directly with the Board.

❤️ The testimony from staff and families was especially compelling, offering firsthand stories that made clear just how essential these prevention services are to Sacramento families.

📊 Evaluation data shared at the hearing helped reinforce that impact with hard evidence, and additional testimony highlighted how Birth & Beyond connects to the broader ecosystem of prevention services across the county.

This is a powerful reminder of what's possible when a community mobilizes around prevention. Congratulations to Birth & Beyond and everyone who lent their voice to this effort, your advocacy made a real difference! 👏💪

📢 SB 557 Is Now Law! 🎉

WE DID IT! 💛 Governor Newsom has signed SB 557 into law. ✅

This important legislation officially updates California’s definition of Family Resource Centers (FRCs) to align with the national definition, strengthening California’s ability to leverage potential future federal funding for FRCs.

This milestone happened because of the advocates, organizations, and community members across California who supported this bill. Every letter, every call, every conversation with a legislator, that made a difference. 💛

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES PROPOSED TO HEAD START

A proposed federal rule could significantly reshape Head Start nationwide, changing how these programs operate and serve children and families.
On August 6, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced a proposed rule that would significantly scale back federal standards for Head Start.

FRCs don't operate in isolation. Many Head Start programs partner directly with local Family Resource Centers to connect families to housing, health, and basic-needs support, and FRCs in turn refer families to Head Start. Since both exist to support children and families, changes to Head Start could ultimately affect the families and children both are working to support.
