Zafia’s Family House, is excited to announce that they have purchased a piece of property in Roseville that will be the site for families of patients undergoing long-term care at both Kaiser and Sutter medical facilities. The home, similar to well-known Ronald McDonald homes throughout the country, was born out of the death of the home’s namesake, Zafia.
After raising over $300,000 to purchase the property located at 1623 Santa Clara Drive (just off of Douglas Boulevard in Roseville), the board is inviting the media to come learn more about the project at a press conference at the property scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 29th. In addition to Roseville Major Carol Garcia, high –level executives from both Kaiser and Sutter will be on hand to talk about the tremendous need for the facility.
Now that the land has been secured near South Placer medical facilities, Zafia’s Family House, a 501 (c) (3), is now entering the capital campaign phase of the project with a goal of raising $2.4 million to complete construction of the home. A full rendering of the property will be unveiled at the press conference.
Zafia’s Family House was founded January 2011. Zafia was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 12. Zafia battled cancer for two years before passing. It was her dying wish that a house be built for families to stay while their child and/or adult is undergoing treatment for a serious illness, rather than subsist on costly alternatives such as hotels.
“Sadly the need for this type of facilities keep growing in the South Placer area,” said Rebecca Fyfe. “The Ronald McDonald House near UC Davis Medical Center is too close to Roseville for them to consider a facility here so we need to step up and fill that void.”
“Sometimes out of tragedy comes opportunity and we want to make that happen for the many, many families who spend long weekends and months with family members receiving medical care at both Sutter and Kaiser. We are thrilled with the support of both partners and look forward to raising the needed funds to make my daughter’s dying wish come true.”
The architect, Kevin Pressey of Pressey and Associates and builder, John P. Caulfield Jr. President/Owner of Landmark Builders (both pro-bono) with support from the Building Industry Association (BIA) and Home Aid are ready to begin.
Once complete the House will be dedicated to provide overnight and/or long term accommodations in a family-centered, homelike, supportive environment to families with a family member hospitalized at Kaiser, Sutter, or any other facility in the Roseville region. The House will provide 12+ private bedrooms, each with a private bath. Common areas will include a kitchen, dayroom, family room, office space, backyard patio, and laundry facilities.
