Sacramento Region Community Foundation We lead, serve, and inspire enduring philanthropy for a just and vibrant Sacramento region.

In the early 1980’s, a small group of community leaders saw a need in the Sacramento region – a need for stable, permanent, financial support that would promote charitable giving and increase the capacity of local nonprofits to meet the growing region’s critical needs. In 1982, a steering committee was formed by the Junior League of Sacramento to explore the idea and attract the necessary funding

to turn the community foundation from concept to reality. The Sacramento Regional Foundation was officially incorporated in April of 1983. Over 35 years later, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, as it is now called, manages over 700 charitable funds for local families, businesses and nonprofits. The majority of those funds are permanently endowed and total assets have grown to $170 million. Annual grants from our charitable funds have grown from $272,900 in 1983 to over $19 million in 2020, and more than $185 million since inception.

Our Director of Operations, Doni Allen, recently had the opportunity to speak on the "Nonprofit Leadership Summit: Leading in the Age of AI" panel at Aggie Square! During the panel, Doni shared the Foundation's experience with implementing AI tools and developing a clear internal policy to guide its use.

"I talked about the importance of having a defined strategy from the outset, and why a clear policy can help staff feel confident and included in the process rather than left behind," Doni shared.

During the panel, Doni also emphasized that AI use is an ongoing learning journey that requires responsible use, human oversight, and consideration of ethical issues that come with these tools.

"It was a valuable experience to hear from fellow panelists and learn from their own challenges and successes, and I walked away with new insights and a broader perspective on where this work is heading in the nonprofit sector."
