Yesterday was compost day. We went to in Sacramento for some top quality mushroom compost. I can just feel the garden beds smiling. When kids ask about the smell, which is very mild but we are talking about some little kids, I tell them, "That's the smell of a successful garden." Thanks Cascade for helping us out a bit.

I am so grateful for the stakeholders in this venture. The sense of community makes my heart smile. It's even better when those folks bring their kiddos to the garden. I couldn't do this without them. We are busy amending, although we still need lots of compost, and cleaning up areas so we can start something new!

A few weeks ago I took a class over at Killdeer Farms in West Sac. Do yourself a favor and check them out, a super cool couple who started a flower farm. Anyways the class focused on starting Fall flowers indoors, where the temperature is generally in the 70s. I don't know why I hadn't thought about it, I mimic the Spring temperatures when I start veggies in January, but this is why I go to places like Killdeer Farms! So now my rack is in my house and I was reminded to fertilize the starters. Here's the problem now. I used diluted fish emulsion to fertilize. Hey, never a problem when the starts are in the garage, but Murphy, our Douge De Bordeaux mix is VERY interesting in my plants now! Maybe fish emulsion was bad idea.

When you hang around the school enough as a volunteer, you just become The Person for whatever it is you do. This morning was no different when Trey from the EGUSD irrigation team was on site and staff directed him to me regarding questions about a sprinkler near the garden that needed repair. Trey cleaned out a corner that had debris and leaves everywhere. And, Trey went the extra mile and tossed all the trash and brought me the leaves so I could add them to the garden beds I was amended for Fall planting. I love teamwork and community. Thanks Trey!

It's still in the upper 90s in the Central Valley and I know I need to get more Fall seeds started, but.....all I want to do is lay under the fan and escape the outside heat. These are the times when my passion feels like work. I know I need to get this done though. To get me through this all I need to do is visualize the beautiful flowers and remember the excited squeal two 6th graders have last week when I told them they'd be planting in the garden. What's your motivation to get you past stuck points?

A few weeks ago the 6th grade C trackers at Joseph Sims planted some giant sunflowers while learning that disparate parts work together in the garden for a common goal. These sunflowers are ready for transplanting.

Twenty three kids came to the garden to plant giant sunflower seeds. Lots of smiles, questions, and sampling of fresh tomato and zucchini. , , , , ,
