This May, SNAHC Youth encourages you to explore reading! Here are some books we recommend:

Sharice’s Big Voice is a children’s picture book telling the story of Sharice Davids, one of the first two Native American women ever elected to Congress, and the first openly LGBTQ+ congressperson to represent Kansas in Washington. Notable Native People: 50 Indigenous Leaders, Dreamers, and Changemakers from Past and Present is an illustrated book celebrating the lives, stories, and contributions of Indigenous artists, activists, scientists, athletes, and other changemakers. Written by Margaret Verble, When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky, follows a young Cherokee horse-diver who, with her companions from the Glendale Park Zoo, must get to the bottom of a mystery that spans centuries in 1926 Nashville.

This April, SNAHC Youth encourages you to explore reading! Here are some books we recommend:

Written and illustrated by S.D. Nelson, The Star People: A Lakota Story follows Sister Girl and her brother, Young Wolf, as they wander far from their village and face great danger. As night approaches, the children find themselves alone in the barren wilderness. As the stars shine brightly, the spirit of their grandmother, Elk Tooth Woman, appears to guide them back home: "The Star People are always with you. Look up, and you will see me among the stars."

Ancestor Approved by Cynthia Leitich Smith follows Native families from Nations across the continent as they gather at the Dance for Mother Earth Powwow in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ancestor Approved features a collection of intersecting stories that bursts with hope, joy, resilience, the strength of community, and Native pride.

Written by Dina Gilio-Whitaker, As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock, is a story of Native peoples' resistance to environmental injustice and a call for environmentalists to learn from the Indigenous community's rich history of activism. Dina Gilio-Whitaker explores the history of treaty violations, struggles for food and water security, and protection of sacred sites, while highlighting the important leadership of Indigenous women in this centuries-long struggle within the novel.
