I took the long drive through Georgetown last Saturday and made it to French Meadows Reservoir and thru 2 of 3 snow drifts that blocked the road around the lake. The 3rd was already occupied by a couple and their 2 dogs in a big red Toyota Tundra! I got no fishing in but the guy who was stuck made it in and said that the MF American was “unfishable”.

I wish I would have taken some photos of the snow drifts and all of the work we did trying to get them unstuck! But I did get some scenery photos of Stumpy Meadows, the Rubicon River, and French Meadows Reservoir areas.

Did you know that one way biologists age fish is by looking microscopically at their scales? During HFF's most recent Trout in the Classroom lesson, 5th graders learned how to determine from a (Steelhead Trout) fish scale how many seasons the fish had been at sea, how old it was, and the number of times it had spawned. The development of circuli (rings) on fish scales are very similar to tree rings. The circuli are widely spaced during times of rapid growth and exhibit tighter spacing when growth has slowed.

The deer brush is growing higher and there’s still only one trail down to the water but lots of people were seeking refuge from the heat here last Sunday when we came up thru Foresthill and returned via Georgetown. Lots of folks at French Meadows and especially at Stumpy Meadows! The MFAR above FM is just a trickle now. At least the private forest land is being restored. Fish were few and far between. (With Dan Burri).

We stopped by the Rubicon on our way home after fishing the MFAR. We saw 2 anglers, spoke with one fly fisher. He saw no fish. Maybe earlier or later?
