Tonight, California Lawyers Association CEO Chris Nguyen is joining leaders and advocates at Morrison & Foerster to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the California Access to Justice Commission.

For three decades, the Commission has worked to expand access to civil justice and remove barriers for Californians. We’re honored to be part of this important celebration and recognize those advancing access to justice across our state.

Today, we commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution and reflect on the principles that continue to shape our democracy and legal system.

The Constitution provides the foundation for the Rule of Law; a system in which laws guide government action, individual rights are protected, and disputes can be resolved through an independent judiciary.

These principles are not limited to history books or courtrooms. They influence our everyday lives and remind us of the shared responsibility to understand, uphold, and participate in our civic institutions.

California Lawyers Association is proud to support the legal profession’s role in advancing the Rule of Law and strengthening the communities we serve.

The law is meant to protect people, not treat them differently because of who they are.

The Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause reflects a fundamental principle: people should receive equal protection under the law, and government classifications must meet constitutional standards.

This principle reaches far beyond the courtroom. It influences education, employment, public services, and countless everyday experiences.

As we prepare to celebrate Constitution Day, equal protection reminds us that fairness under the law matters to everyone.

The Constitution establishes the foundation of our legal system. Courts help bring its principles to life by interpreting and applying the law, resolving disputes, and protecting the rights and liberties of individuals.

An independent judiciary is essential to the Rule of Law. It helps ensure that legal decisions are guided by the law—not personal interests or arbitrary power.

As we approach Constitution Day, we recognize the important role courts and the legal profession play in upholding the principles that support a fair and functioning justice system.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001, and the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the victims, survivors, first responders, service members, and all those whose lives were forever changed by the events of 9/11.

We remember the extraordinary courage and compassion shown in the days and years that followed, and we reflect on the values that bind our communities together: service, resilience, justice, and a commitment to the rule of law.

Today, and always, we remember.
