Waylon had been waiting 95 days for someone to choose him.
Then a 9-year-old walked through the shelter doors wearing a gold sequined blazer.
His name was Cairo Hall, though his family calls him Cai.
Cai had wanted a dog since he was 3 years old. So when he and his mom visited PAWS Shelter of Central Texas in Kyle in June 2025, this was not a casual decision to him.
Waylon was a young pit bull mix who had already spent more than three months at the shelter after being transferred from an overcrowded facility.
Staff adored him. He was so comfortable around the front office that he sometimes served as their unofficial "office dog."
But adopters kept passing him by.
Cai did not.
When they spent time together outside, Cai asked Waylon to sit, rewarded him with treats and started asking the staff questions.
Not just whether Waylon knew tricks.
What food did he eat?
Was he afraid of anything?
How should heartworm be prevented?
How did microchip registration work?
What kind of training would be best?
Shelter adoption counselor Katheryn White said Cai's preparation stood out even compared with many adults.
He had been watching dog-care videos online because he wanted to understand what owning a dog actually required.
And then there was the outfit.
Cai had dressed in a sparkling gold blazer for the occasion.
Why?
His explanation did not need many words:
"It was a special moment."
Waylon went home with him.
Forbes later reported that the two had become inseparable, filling their days with training, tug-of-war and plenty of cuddling.
A dog waited 95 days.
A kid waited roughly six years.
Then somehow, on one very well-dressed day, both waits ended.
