Throughout ANHPI Heritage Month, CAAPLE has proudly highlighted the accomplishments and leadership journeys of ANHPI superintendents serving in California’s school districts and county offices of education. Their paths to the superintendency are diverse, shaped by personal perseverance, professional excellence, and the complex hiring and political systems that define educational leadership.
Despite their significant contributions, ANHPI superintendents remain dramatically underrepresented in California’s educational leadership ranks. Among approximately 1,000 school districts and county offices of education statewide, ANHPI superintendents represent only 2.5% of all superintendents. At the same time, ANHPI student enrollment in California schools is approaching 13%, revealing a demographic gap of more than 10 percentage points between the students served and those occupying the highest levels of educational decision-making.
This month, we were honored to feature 19 of the 25 identified ANHPI superintendents currently serving in California districts and county offices of education. While six leaders chose not to participate in the spotlight series, we are pleased to recognize and celebrate their service and leadership:
Dr. Froilan Mendoza, Baldwin Park Unified School District
Lee Lao, Winton Unified School District
Amy Nguyen-Hernandez, Central School District
Chien Wu-Fernandez, Hayward Unified School District
Dr. Maria Su, San Francisco Unified School District
Dr. Carolee Ogata, Huntington Beach Union High School District
We extend our gratitude to these leaders for their commitment to California’s students, families, and communities. Their presence and leadership continue to pave the way for future generations of ANHPI educators and educational leaders.
