🚢 A highlight of the Long Distance Advisory Council (LDAC) meetings, held recently in The Hague, was a site visit to the pelagic freezer trawler Zeeland SCH-123, operated by Cornelis Vrolijk, members of the Pelagic Freezer Trawler Association (PFA).

Understanding the realities of fishing operations is essential if we want to identify practical, evidence-based ways to improve welfare in wild-capture fisheries. 🐟 ALI will continue engaging constructively with Advisory Councils, industry, and policymakers to ensure that aquatic animal welfare is part of the conversation on responsible fisheries management.

We are grateful to Tim Heddema, PFA, and Cornelis Vrolijk for the invite, and the vessel’s captain and crew for welcoming us on board and providing a detailed look at the technology and operations involved in modern pelagic fishing.

Have you seen it yet? 🎬🐙 Stories like Remarkably Bright Creatures, recently launched on Netflix, create a rare sense of connection with species we might otherwise never encounter. As science continues to deepen our understanding of aquatic animal intelligence and sentience, there is a growing opportunity to see them differently and to care more about their welfare.

🌏🦐 The way we treat aquatic animals impacts our planet. Entire ecosystems, trillions of lives.

Aquatic animals are the largest category of animals used for human consumption. The figures are staggering, with trillions wild caught and billions farmed in industrial aquaculture every year.

This Earth Day’s “Our power, our planet” theme invites us to take action 🐟 And, for us at ALI, this means driving systems-level change for billions of aquatic animals within the global food industry.
