Today is Community Support Day as we continue to celebrate IEHA Week. Several of the clubs in Rush County do volunteer work throughout the year in Rush County. One club passes an envelope around during each meeting to collect money to be given to the local food pantry. Every three months club members bring some kind of treat that are put in bags and given to residents at the assisted living at the Waters. Another club provides gifts for two families at Christmastime. They also have spring plant and bake sale to raise funds for the library. They also collect food for the local church food pantry and school supplies at the beginning of the school year. Coloring books and magazines are given to the extended care facilities. Another club donates cookies for Young Life. All the clubs help out during the fair during open class judging as well as volunteer as hostesses at the Root Building. Some clubs help support 4-H by sponsoring awards. One club member is in charge of the First Books program and reads to Headstart children as well as donates books for each child. And this is just a small list of things that each of the clubs do for the community. So Rush County Extension Homemakers clubs are involved throughout the comminity during the year volunteering and giving back to others in need.

As we continue to celebrate IEHA (Indiana Extension Homemakers Association) week, today we focus on Education Day. One of the projects Rush County Extension Homemakers support is the Nancy Bell Extension Homemakers Club Scholarship. It is a $500 scholarship given to a high school senior who is involved in the local 4-H program and plans to further their education in Consumer and Family Sciences, Child Development and Family Studies, Dietetics, Food Science, Hotel Management or related fields. The scholarship was named after Mrs. Fred Bell who was our first Rush County Extension Home Economics County President - 1925-1930. The scholarship was started in 1982.

Some of the ways Rush County Extension Homemakers make money for the scholarship is sell plants, baked goods and Rada Cutlery at the Garden Fest in May and also sells Rada Cutlery during Wilkie Days in September. They also accept free will donations throughout the year. If you would like to help support the Nancy Bell Scholarship you may send a check made out to the Rush County Extension Homemakers and mail to the Purdue Extension Rush County, Indiana office at 101 East 2nd St., Rushville IN 46173. As we celebrate IEHA (Indiana Extension Homemakers Association) this week, we would like to recognize one of Rush County's own, Eleanor Arnold. She is a life long volunteer in areas of history, historic preservation, oral history and rural women's lives, edited seven books, six containing oral histories of rural and small town women in Indiana, one from histories collected from forty states. These books tell you the true story of Extension Homemakers through the years and are still available through Amazon.

Welcome to IEHA Week, October 20th -24th. IEHA stands for Indiana Extension Homemakers. The three figures depict the endless combination of family members, representing male and female, adult and child. The IEHA, the Association's acronym, form an important portion of the home by providing support. The roof of the home extends beyond the perimeter of the design, indicating that the influence of IEHA extends beyond the home and the family to the surrounding community.

Indiana Extension Homemakers Association, founded in 1913, continues to build on its rich heritage by working to strengthen Indiana homes and families. Membership is open to all regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, handicap or national origin.

Here in Rush County we have five clubs with approximately 85 members.

Learn more about what we do during this week. For more information about joining a local club, call the Purdue Extension Rush County, Indiana at 765-932-5974.

We are seeking interested individuals that would like to share their skill by demonstrating and or helping others make a small craft item during the event. We are looking for crafts that are geared for any age. A small fee is allowed for materials.

So anyone interested in being a craft presenter please message us with your ideas before October 20th. Include your contact info, description of item, cost to make item and length of time to make.
