Detroit Teams Shine at Ferndale FIRST Robotics Event
The FIRST Robotics event held in Ferndale, Michigan, last weekend was a thrilling showcase of innovation, teamwork, and competitive spirit. Among the many talented teams, seven from Detroit made a significant impact:
Team 1701 - The RoboCubs from University of Detroit Jesuit High School
Team 4680 - Az-Tech Eagles from Cesar Chavez Academy High School
Team 5577 - Kinematic Wolves from Detroit Cristo Rey High School
Team 5642 - Mechanical Mustangs from Mumford High School
Team 7856 - Upad Fusion from University Prep
Team 8280 - K9.0 Robotics from The School at Marygrove
Team 10577 - The Tarminators from Denby High School
Four of these teams represent the Detroit build centers—the Michigan Engineering Zone (MEZ) and the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation(DHDC). Both organizations work tirelessly to provide services and materials to Detroit robotics teams. Additionally, in attendance were two of the leadership teams from the Motor City Alliance (Teams 5577 and 8280), who work year-round with 100 K-12 robotics teams across Detroit.
Two teams stood out for their resilience and dedication as newcomers:
Team 10577 - The Tarminators from Denby High School made their debut as a new rookie team from Detroit, showcasing impressive skills and determination throughout the competition.
Team 5642 - Mechanical Mustangs from Mumford High School were composed of a rookie coach and students new to FIRST Robotics, demonstrating remarkable teamwork and a fast-learning curve.
Three Detroit teams made it to the final alliance selection, showcasing their strategic prowess and technical skills. Team 1701, The RoboCubs, captained Alliance 2, while Team 5577, Kinematic Wolves, led Alliance 3. Team 8280, K9.0 Robotics, was picked for Alliance 6, further highlighting the strength of Detroit's robotics community.
In addition to their impressive performances on the field, several Detroit teams received special recognition for their achievements:
Team 4680 - Az-Tech Eagles won the Team Spirit Award, which celebrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit through exceptional partnership and teamwork.
Team 8280 - K9.0 Robotics received the Rising All-Star Award, which celebrates the team that has persisted through challenges, despite the difficulties of being young. This could be the result of being a new team, or a team with recent turnover in membership. They were also honored as a District Event Finalist, acknowledging their remarkable performance throughout the competition.
The event was a testament to the dedication and talent of Detroit's young engineers and innovators. Their achievements at the Ferndale FIRST Robotics event not only brought pride to their schools but also inspired the next generation of robotics enthusiasts.
