With the weather cooling off more trail updates are happening at Harris Lake County Park. In addition to new connector trails, many of the bridges will be getting facelifts in the near future. This bridge in the North section was widened to better accommodate adapted cyclists. None of this happens without the efforts from our great volunteers so if you want to come out and play in the dirt for a few hours be on the lookout for upcoming workdays on the TORC Meetup page. Briar Chapel Trail Update — September 2026

It's been another busy month of trail work! Hopefully this is the last of the trimming!

First, some stats:
* 40+ volunteer hours in September
* Majority of the trail system trimmed
* 3 trees cleared
* 1 bridge repaired
* 1 feature repaired

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to our workday in September. It was a mix of residents and TORC volunteers. Here's a quick rundown of what volunteers tackled:
* Trimming. We worked across 8 major areas, focusing on the thick, bushy overgrowth that makes everyone think "ticks, bugs, and I don't want to walk there." The majority of the trail system should have significantly more clearance now.
* Tree clearing. Lighter duty than last month, with only 3 trees to deal with. Shoutout to Will for tackling a couple of them!
* Bridge repair. Will is at it again: calling out the issue, helping grab lumber from our stockpile, and finishing the build! Pictured below - bridge testing by a young volunteer.
* Feature repair. We replaced broken deck boards on the table top on unSTANKtioned - also pictured below, testing done by a veteran volunteer after the picture was taken. We still have one more feature to replace - that feature was removed for safety reasons.

Motorized incidents dropped this month, with just 1 quad bike and a couple of scooters on the trails. A reminder: the trails are for non-motorized use only, with no exceptions. That includes electric and gas motorcycles, motorized scooters, quad bikes, and e-bikes with a throttle. If you're considering a purchase for someone in your household, please talk with your rider about where to ride. Thanks for helping keep the trails safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Our next workday is tentatively scheduled for October 24 (originally 10/17, there’s a race here that day). My list, prioritized:
* Rock armoring for a wet spot on Misfit Mile
* Water management repair near the dog park
* Enhanced Skills Park signage

Tonight in Cary: for riders and residents, there’s an opportunity to speak up for safer, more connected ways to get around town.

At tonight’s Cary Town Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Lori Bush and Councilmember Bella Huang are bringing forward a request to have staff evaluate turning the existing Transportation Working Group into a permanent Transportation and Mobility Committee. The proposed committee would give residents an ongoing voice on bike and pedestrian safety, greenways, transit, and other mobility issues. The committee is not being created tonight; Council is considering the request to explore it.

If you support that step, consider sharing a brief comment during Public Speaks Out. The meeting starts tonight, September 24, at 6:30 p.m. in Town Council Chambers, 316 N. Academy St., Cary. Speakers have up to three minutes. If you missed the advance sign-up deadline, Cary says you can fill out a speaker card when you arrive.

September brings a season of change at TORC—and plenty of reasons to celebrate the people behind our trails.

William Blackmon is our Summer Volunteer Spotlight! From workdays to special events, William keeps showing up. Thank you to the Endurance Collective for celebrating his service with a private MTB skills session.

We had a great event at the Briar Chapel’s Redesign Festival. Thanks to Tamara Sanders of Back Alley Bikes for the suspension clinic, and Amy and Andy of Breakaway Cafe for keeping everyone well fed.

Thank you, Alex Haley and Barry Evans, for years of Trail Coordinator stewardship at RTP. And thank you, Farris, for nearly two decades as a builder, ride leader, coach, mentor, and friend to this community. We’re wishing you the best in your next chapter with Pisgah Area SORBA.

Briar Chapel Trail Update — August 2026

Briar Chapel wrapped up a busy summer on the trails. Here's what happened across July and August.

By the numbers
* 30+ signs installed
* 7+ trees cleared
* 4 event maps created
* 1+ mile trimmed
* 1 washout repaired
* 1 trail construction project completed
* 1 trail event, 100+ attendees

Regular trail work
Storms don't care what's on the calendar. Thank you to everyone who came out to our July and August workdays:
* Tree clearing. Several storms blew through and dropped trees of all sizes. Our sawyers cleared them safely.
* Washout repair. Also courtesy of the storms — we repaired a washout on AVID using locally sourced dirt and rock. Thank you Christopher!
* Trimming. Herndon Loop and Catullo Run both grow shut fast. Thank you TJ for tackling a good chunk of Herndon, and Chris for the rest.
* Signage. Bennett and Herndon are now in line with the rest of the system. Only the skills park is left. Thank you Will!

Redesign Festival
On top of the regular maintenance, we spent the past month preparing for the Briar Chapel Redesign Festival - a celebration of the redesigned Bennett Mountain, Herndon Loop, and Catullo Run. We couldn’t have made it happen without the support of our volunteers, partners, and the Briar Chapel Community Association.

We were nervous about the 1.5" of rain the night before, and the trails shrugged it off - the erosion and drainage work of the last two years doing exactly what it was built to do. We hosted at the intersection of Bennett Mountain and Herndon Loop, where 100+ trail users rode the new trails with us after breakfast. Great turnout, great atmosphere, and we'd like to make this a regular thing.

Nature Trails is done!
Nature Trails has wrapped up their work on Bennett, bringing the project to completion. That's the last of the planned contractor work at Briar Chapel for 2026. A huge thank you to their crew — Clay in particular, out there all day every day — and to the trail users and residents who respected the work areas and gave the crew room to work.

Want to help?
Trimming is where we need hands most. The drought has slowed plant growth and bought us some breathing room, but they are coming back in force. There are several sections of trail that could use attention.
