The Martin’s Landing Foundation completed its first deer management action this weekend with an approved cull organized by the MLF Deer Management Committee with oversight from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GDNR). We’re pleased to say that the project was a success with no safety incidents and we were able to donate 100% of the meat to local food banks.
Safety First!
If you’re interested in learning more about the safety measures used to ensure the utmost safety of our community, here are some highlights:
• DNR officials set hunting guidelines and plans ahead of time by identifying fields of fire, outlining minimum safety buffers from homes and roads, and developing a communication plan
• All operations were conducted by licensed hunters prequalified through safety checks and skills assessments conducted by the DNR
• Hunters were stationary, positioned in elevated tree stands to ensure proper backstop
• Constant radio communication between the DNR, hunters, and volunteers helped ensure safety
• There were no incidents of deer running into the community or roadways and all deer were retrieved
• All shots were conducted in the established zones and all arrows were accounted for
• All ingress and egress points were staffed and volunteers continuously walked the perimeter to monitor operations
We’d like to thank our residents for your support. We encountered no conflicts but did speak to many well-educated and aware neighbors. We’d also like to thank the DNR representatives, hunters, and volunteers who made this project safe and beneficial to our community.
