Greetings fellow earthlings on this Earth Day, 2026!
Artemis II pilot, Victor Glover observed from their monumental trip at the beginning of this month, "In all of this emptiness...you have this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist in together." His Canadian crew member, Jeremy Hanson wore an additional personal patch honoring the "Seven Grandfather Teachings" designed for him by Anishinaabe artist Henry Guimond of Sagkeeg First Nation in Manitoba. Our teachers teach our students about these teachings, too, because Indigenous knowledge and ways of being in nature guide us in protecting and caring for our world and each other! And to put where humans are in this moment in time in powerful perspective, I highly recommend listening to this short episode from my favorite podcast, The Wild with Chris Morgan (I find all of the episodes inspiring!): https://www.kuow.org/stories/earth-day-2026-you-look-beautiful
Our goal every day we are outside immersed in the natural world with our students is to cultivate learning and growth in joyful partnership with nature and our community. Our school exists because we want to nurture our most important relationship to that which makes our lives not only possible but beautiful and dynamic--this magnificent planet that is uniquely suited to support life in our solar system! How do we protect our planet? We do it together!
Thank you, to our beautiful blue planet Earth! With love from all of us at Washington Outdoor School!
