In January we’ve made it a tradition to travel for Carter’s birthday. He loves flying! Despite having to pack lots of medical supplies and equipment we won’t stop trying to show our son the world. We prayers for moments like this.

When we started this organization in 2020 our son had only been out of the NICU for 5 months. He was still on oxygen and a ventilator. We vowed to give back to NICU parents because our lives had been transformed by the experience. We saw miracles, we bonded with other parents, we cried, laughed and we hoped that our baby would come home. Those 226 days were TOUGH!

Carter G. Cares is our way to give back. Every meal that we deliver, every book for babies, every gas card for families and every post that we share is our way to serve a place that gave so much to us. Today we share the story of our little NICU Grad who is now a 7 year old boy who is thriving despite a rocky start.

This is an abbreviated version of Carter’s bedtime routine. Every night his nurse (or mom/dad) gives medicines into the trach and g-tube, breathing treatments, tube feeding and of course bath time.

Carter has a love/hate relationship with his AAC device. We initially thought “Yay we finally have a way to communicate!” It has been almost 3 years and he still doesn’t use it consistently. I think that because we anticipated his needs to several years he still expects us to know what’s on his mind.

So everyday we keep trying! Sometimes he uses it VERY effectively (mostly when he’s shading us 🤣) and others he refuses.

I wish I could say that after Carter was no longer vent and oxygen dependent we were able to have a happy ever after.

The truth is that he is still medically fragile due to being born at prematurely. We STILL worry about colds and rsv, we STILL have oxygen in the home for when he gets sick and he STILL has a trach which presents its own challenges. Not to mention autism and everything that comes with it.

Everyday we thank God for our sons life and we ask Him to continue to give us strength to be the best parents that we can be. Most importantly we pray that God gives Carter a full life with lots of joy and love.

Flashback Friday to our summer day at the NICU reunion ❤️ One thing we always try to do is expose our son to every opportunity available. Even when his behavior is challenging we will not stop trying to show him the world. This week was tough for Carter but reflecting on days like this is what keeps us going.
