A fun fact about Amanda is that she taught herself how to play piano!

When asked what she likes about the CAIS, she shared
"What I really like about the center is how much it makes me feel like I'm at home. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. We're all kind of like family. "

Her message to first-year students:
"Never give up and never say you can't because you can!"

Thank you Amanda for all that you do for CAIS and Lakota Omniciye, we appreciate you!

⚡️SICANGU GRAD SPOTLIGHT ( #4)⚡️

Good news for the Sicangu Oyate just keeps on coming, this time in the form of the phenomenal, determined, hard-working Whisper Crow Dog. Please wish her well! Here’s what she has to say about her time in college:

“Hán mítákúyapi Whisper Šúnka Kánğí emáčíyapí kšto náhán Lákólčage TaSina Ota Yuha Mani Win he miye. South Dakota emátanhán na Unjinjintka Wákpala el wati ye. Čhánte wášte nape cheusapte kšto.
Hello my name is Whisper Crow Dog and my Lakota name is Walks With Many Shawls. I am from Rosebud, South Dakota and I greet your hands with a good heart.

This past spring semester, I recently graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) with my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Currently, this fall semester, I am now attending Sinte Gleska University to receive my Master’s degree in Lakota Studies.

During my time in college, I’ve taken on leadership roles both as a mentor and an independent artist. As a reminder, my Senior Project - The University of the Universe, can be viewed on my artist website (whispercrowdog.com). Studying at IAIA has allowed me to explore new mediums and expand my artistic practice; while living in Santa Fe, NM has brought me meaningful experiences - making new lifelong friends, traveling, gardening, and growing my critical thinking skills as I prepare for my next phase as an emerging artist.

✨This moment is for life✨
I’ve faced trials, tribulations, and the loss of loved ones. Being 13 hours away from home, it often got lonely, even though my family was waiting for me to return. Along the way, my friends, who are now my brothers and sisters, will forever be in my prayers. But I stayed committed to my education - to make my family and my tribe proud.

For the past 8 years, I’ve carried the weight of financial burdens and traveled this journey on my own. Today, it has finally paid off. My family was able to watch me walk across the stage, and they saw my senior project come part of the permanent collection at the IAIA MoCNA Art Museum in downtown Santa Fe Plaza in New Mexico.

⚡️SICANGU GRAD SPOTLIGHT ( #3)⚡️

Please join us in celebrating the amazing Chase Baird-Iron Cloud for graduating from Stanford University back in June. An incredible accomplishment for an incredible person. Here she is to tell you all about it:

“I come from the Knife Chief tiošpaye in Porcupine, SD and also live in the area of Porcupine. I graduated from Stanford University with my major degree in Human Biology and a minor in Education Research and Policy.

Throughout my time at Stanford I had the pleasure of helping with the Stanford Powwow, being part of the Stanford American Indian Organization, working at the Women’s Community Center, and the Native American Cultural Center. I was also able to participate in creative experiences such as designing for Stanford’s Fashion Show.

Throughout my time in college I hold close the friendships that grounded and supported me. As well as my connections with professors that gave me guidance. In the upcoming future I will be obtaining my MPH degree, but also embarking on creative endeavors I explored while at Stanford.

Attending Stanford had been my goal for quite some time and being able to graduate from there feels like a testament of hard work and courage. The beginning of my college journey was not the easiest. However, I learned new habits and skills to better adapt to the environment, and over time I saw my efforts pay off.

Some words I would like to share with Native students are that it’s okay if your efforts start slow and you don’t see the outcome you want right away. Things didn’t pick up or click for me until my junior year, and it wasn’t until my senior year that my endeavors took off for me (in a good way). Each experience opens a door whether that is to be a better student, meet new people, or try something different. So, enjoy the whole journey and know that all the good will be great.”

Chase wopila iciciye, taku otehi ke opta ilale na wounspe wankatiya iyekcu na woksape oyate unkuntanha luha ❤️💛

(Thank you to Chase for overcoming obstacles and earning her degree for herself and the collective knowledge of the tribe)

Our next shoutout of the season goes to the inspiring, phenomenal, and determined Amia Roach-Valandra from the Rosebud community. This past May she graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in human health & sciences and a minor in public health.

Despite taking a risk and moving across the country, she impressively built an incredible community for herself at USC through clubs and connections.

She has this to say about her experience:

“This moment was one of the biggest accomplishments of my life & it feels surreal. I encourage anyone that is on the path of education to keep going. It’s hard but well worth it. Wopila!”

Her next step is to complete her master’s degree in public health at the University of South Dakota.

⚡️SICANGU GRAD SPOTLIGHT⚡️

Our first shoutout of the season goes to a standout student and person, Kelsey Lynn Morrison or Tán Katokiya Wakita (looks carefully first). She resides in the Horse Creek community in Rosebud, near White River, South Dakota. This past May she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. The most incredible part? She did all of this in three years instead of the usual four.

Although she worked hard in the classroom, making the dean’s list many times, she still found time for extracurriculars. She played college golf, earning 2 WGCA All-American awards, shadowed at clinics, earned awards for club leadership, and even worked a part time job.

Her next step is to begin studying for the admission exam for optometry school, continuing her dream of becoming an optometrist. Kelsey is an inspiration, and she has this to say to the youth:

“Graduating college was a huge testimony in my life. Many fail to realize the amount of work it takes to accomplish such a huge thing while entering adulthood. This milestone symbolizes the evolution of both my character and capabilities. I am very proud of myself for reaching this standard for myself and for all of Lakota Nation. I hope that many see college as something they too are capable of doing, and know that I root for all those attending. I will strive to continue to set an example to all Native American youth and hope that they purse their dreams and believe they can rise above adversity and realize their fullest potentials”

Wočeki hogna Kelsey yuha wičoni waunspe wakat akuwb pi optometry hogna (prayers for Kelsey as she continues her optometry journey) ❤️💛

⚡️Sicangu Grad Spotlight ( #3)⚡️

Our third shoutout of the season fittingly goes to #3 on the court, the incredible Raven Cournoyer. This month, she graduated with honors from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota with her bachelor’s degree in exercise science along with a minor in health.

Academically, she stood out with multiple dean’s list appearances and multiple showings on the RMAC conference’s honor roll. She was also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. Athletically, she left her mark on the basketball court as a team captain for a team that made 3 national tournament appearances during her tenure and won the RMAC conference in 2020.

Her next move is to attend Regis University in Denver, Colorado to pursue her Doctor of Physical Therapy. If we know anything, Raven will overcome any obstacles to achieve her goals, as she overcame two serious knee injuries to come back even better than she was before on the basketball court. She has a wonderfully supportive family that has led her to where she is today, and they will continue to guide her. Because of all this, we cannot wait to see Dr. Cournoyer. Raven represents the Oyate with great pride and wholeheartedly embodies the values of respect, generosity, wisdom, and fortitude.

One of Raven’s goals is to become a PT in Rosebud, inspiring other Sicangu Lakota youth in the process:

“My love for exercise, sports, and the need for a physical therapist in our community made my decision to become a physical therapist an easy one. I do not want to witness another athlete lose an opportunity for a scholarship because of an injury that could have been healed with physical therapy. I do not want another elder to live in pain or lose the ability to live a quality life. Providing therapy services is not my only goal. I want to be a positive role model for the younger population on our reservation. I want to be the person that I was longing for when I was growing up. I want to say to our youth that I look like you and come from the same background as you. I face the same negative challenges as you. I am you. I succeeded and so can you.”

💛❤️

⚡️SICANGU GRAD SPOTLIGHT⚡️

The next of many spotlights to come this grad season, the sensational Wiconi Uses Arrow. She recently graduated with her Associates in Applied Science, Dental Assistant from Minnesota West Community & Technical College. Not only has she earned her Associates degree, but she was also a starter for Minnesota West’s basketball team. She is extremely proud of the fact that they were regional, district, and eventually NJCAA Division 3 National Champions.

She has now set herself up for a great life in more ways than one, as she also graduated from Basic Training for the Army National Guard. She was an Honors Graduate with the National Guard, graduating top 10 in her class and receiving an Army Achievement medal.

With these two major accomplishments under her belt, she is interning with 2 dental offices this summer for 10 weeks and then returning got the Army’s Advanced Individual Training (AIT) this August. Balancing a career in dental assisting and the Army is no small task, but if anyone can do it, it is Wiconi.

However her life plays out, we know her ancestors are looking down at her with immense pride for representing herself and the Sicangu Lakota Oyate with such power and grace. Congratulations Wiconi!! ❤️💛

⚡️SICANGU GRAD SPOTLIGHT⚡️

We could not be more proud and excited to introduce the phenomenal Matilda Anderson, hailing from the Two Strike community in Rosebud and a proud St Francis Indian School alumni. This past Sunday she realized a lifelong dream of hers, graduating from the University of Kansas. She earned her BSE in Community Health with a minor in Psychology and an Entrepreneurship Certification. As much of an individual accomplishment as this is for Matilda, it is about more than herself. She has this message for everybody:

“To all the young Native kids out there, I want you to know that your dreams are valid, your potential is limitless, & your future is bright. No matter where you come from or what obstacles you may face, you have the power to shape your own destiny & create the life you envision for yourself. Growing up on the rez, I know firsthand the challenges and struggles that many of you may encounter. But I also know that you carry the DNA of our ancestors who were resilient and resourceful, and deeply rooted in the belief that education is the key to unlocking a better future.

Today, you see a lot of Native college grads. They are living proof that it is possible to leave the rez, pursue higher education, and achieve your goals. A dream can never be too big. Believe in your abilities, work hard, and never lose sight of the incredible potential that lies within you. Remember to be yourself and never forget your roots. You are capable of greatness. Seize every opportunity, embrace every challenge, and know that you are never alone on this journey. Living in two worlds can be tough but we were made and taught to be resilient. Together, we can break down barriers and create a future where every Native kid has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. The sky's the limit so chase those dreams and get yours! If I can do it, you can too.”

It should not be lost how incredible of an accomplishment graduation is for each of our graduates. Matilda is a leader. She is a part of this next, beautiful generation paving the way for a thriving and spiritually prosperous Sicangu Lakota Oyate 💛❤️
