Today marks 6 years since the founder of the Spurlock Judicial Foundation, Judge Joe Spurlock II, passed away. Judge Joe started this well over 30 years ago and we are so proud to be able to continue doing what he loved.

TX26: Day 16: Our last full day in Mongolia! We met with a minister of parliament at the Ministry of Justice and had a great lunch with the Chimid Foundation. We also had the chance to visit the Gandantegchinlen Monastery on Buddha Day, which was quite special! We ended the night with family dinner hosted by Batsukh and his family. We are so grateful for our team and Lawyers Support Center!

TX26: Day 15: Travel day! We got on the road bright and early— had to start with a 7:00am shot of Jack Daniel’s at the gates of the city for safe travels…. 🫪😁 We had many furry friends wish us farewell at the gates. Country roads took us home to Ulaanbaatar! We concluded the day by sharing a meal with good friends.

TX26: Day 14: Wow! What an amazing day. We started the day with a visit to a herdman’s ger. There we ate delicious homemade food, cuddled with a baby goat, rode camels, and hiked up a sand dune. It was magical! Next, we made our way to the Flaming Cliffs. The Flaming Cliffs are world-famous as one of the most important paleontological sites on Earth. The first scientific proof that dinosaurs laid eggs was discovered here! Lastly, we visited an Ice Canyon. Sunlight does not hit the inner walls of the canyon, so there was still ice defrosting. Not many people can say they drank fresh ice-cold stream water in the Gobi Desert! A huge thank you to Bayarmaa, a local attorney and SJF alumni, who made all of this possible.

TX26: Day 12: Last day of training! Participants got to see an example of an expert witness cross-examination. Afterwards, the delegation made its way to the Ömnögovi courthouse for meetings with the Appellate Chief Judge Delgermaa and the Prosecutors office. We learned a lot about the needs of the province, and hope to work together in the near future to help them address their unique issues. Lastly, we were welcomed into a nomadic family’s ger for a traditional dish, boodog. The herdsman named 2 new born sheep Matthew and Natasha. It was incredible!

TX26: Day 12: Training day! The Spurlock Foundation returns to Omnogovi after 20 years to train on the role of the judiciary, investigations, and adversarial trials. It was very special to be back to a place that was so close to Judge Joe’s heart! There were lots of amazing questions, thank you to all the participants!
