🩵 ROLLA, YOU SHOWED UP. 🩵

Today, 45 people came together for our first Abide & Provide — and WOW. 🛒

We handed out shopping lists and a little money, headed into the store together, and watched something beautiful happen. The goal was to purchase items most needed by families impacted by immigration detention.

People added items of their own. Carts filled up. Groceries piled high. Friends brought friends. Kids helped shop. And in a very short amount of time, this community turned a simple idea into a TON of food for our immigrant neighbors and families who need a little extra support.

But today wasn’t really about groceries.

It was about what happens when we choose to show up for one another.

45 people said, in one simple and practical way:

You are our neighbor. You belong here. And you are not alone. 🩵

To every person who came, shopped, donated, shared our posts, brought someone along, or helped make today happen — THANK YOU.

This is what community looks like. This is what it means to Abide in Love. 🕊️

If you're in the St. Louis area and someone in your life is arrested by ICE, there's a good chance they don't stay anywhere near the city.

Almost everyone ICE arrests (or local police departments deputized by ICE) in the St. Louis area is taken about 30–40 miles south, to Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center. In 2026, this facility has held an average of over 130 ICE detainees a day, with the daily count reaching as high as 170.

On average, people are held here a little over 3 weeks. But right now, the people currently detained across Ste. Genevieve and Phelps combined have already been waiting an average of 42 days - well past that average, and still separated from their families.

We don't know exactly how ICE decides how long someone stays. We do know that every one of those days is a day away from family.

Do you remember Armande? She has been detained since Jan 22 even though she has followed all the rules given by the federal government. She has been away from her job, her family, her friends, and her church for 7 months. There is an opporutunity for her to make one more appeal to the US Court of Appeals to be released on bond. (Her story is told on the Abide in Love website in the Detention Diaries).

She needs another $10,600 for legal fees for her appeal. Please consider helping Armande.

August Update: Hey folks, I have some disappointing news to share. O… Jessica Lennick needs your support for Free Armande: Legal Defense and Care Fund

Polo had legal status until one day in the first Trump administration. Due to an error by the immigration office Polo was left technically out of status, with no accessible pathway to correct it.

Paulo was detained in April 2025 after someone hit him from behind with a hammer. He was removed from the ambulance and interrogated for 17 hours in St. Louis. He never received any medical treatment or assessment for his concussion. Then, he was transported to Phelps County Jail in Rolla, MO.

Over the next 8 months, Polo was moved from facility to facility. Sometimes, he was in different county jails that are paid by ICE to house detainees. County jails have a long procedure to get medications approved by ICE. In ICE facilities, he received no medication for type 1 diabetes, was not allowed to test his blood sugar, and often was denied meals.

In El Paso, men went hungry enough to eat toothpaste. They slept sitting up in overcrowded cages under desert heat that often topped 100 degrees. Guards sometimes encouraged fights and even placed bets on them. Polo spent time in solitary after helping an elderly man who fainted. He was denied communion, a core part of his faith.

The time spent in El Paso, especially without medication, seemed interminable. Abide in Love strategically called and emailed on Polo's behalf, making sure his partner Julianne didn't have to do this alone and that the facility knew he had a community behind him, paying attention to his treatment. The facility chose to deport Polo.

If you would like to read the whole story, please visit the Abide in Love blog “Detention Diaries: One Family’s Fight to Stay Whole” under the News & Media tab. The whole story tells the impact to his American partner and children. They spent $89K on legal fees to try to get legal status back for Polo. Now, they are living in Mexico.
