Hero’s Rest is a U.S. retreat center dedicated to serving first responders, active and veteran mil retreat center dedicated to serving first responders.

First responders regularly and courageously engage with trauma. Frequently this results in suffering from PTSD and facing burnout. In response to a growing need, Shalam Ministries presents, Hero’s Rest! Located in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks, Hero’s Rest will be the first-ever U.S. Regular, gifted stays of rest and engagement with nature in a private setting, will mitigate high levels of stress

and fatigue. Our goal is for our nation’s heroes to stay active at work longer and be more effective in their jobs. Every person needs and benefits from the sacrifices of first responders. With your help, we can honor our nation’s heroes and give them the support they need to keep serving with excellence! What We Offer:

Camping
Hassle-free Camping: Cabin (or walled tent) and gear provided
Roughing-it Camping: Campsite or raw land made available for conventional or primitive camping with skilled guests’ own gear
Survival Camping: Intensive, guided primitive camping – includes choosing a raw site, primitive shelter construction. Fishing
Both on site and in local water bodies. Kayaking/Canoeing
Canoeing, kayaking, and float trips in the beautiful local river.

Today, we are celebrating something pretty special at Hero’s Rest! 🎉 Today, Hero's Rest supporters, John and Candy Krug, are celebrating 50 years of marriage!! And they have chosen to celebrate by sponsoring today at Hero’s Rest. ❤️🤍💙

For 50 years they have built a life together, raising three wonderful children - Melissa, Stephanie, and Timothy - who have blessed them with 14 grandchildren! John and Candy have been longtime supporters of Hero’s Rest, and their continued encouragement means more to us than they probably realize. We are so grateful that they have chosen to share this special milestone by supporting first responders and veterans through Hero’s Rest.

Happy 50th anniversary and congratulations, John and Candy! 🎉🎉 We are honored to celebrate your marriage as we continue our work at Hero's Rest. We are so thankful for you both!

🇺🇸 Today at Hero's Rest, we remember and honor Private First Class Richard McGathey, born August 7, 1924. A WWII veteran, PFC McGathey was among the heroic soldiers of the First Infantry Division who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Just days later, he was wounded in battle. For his courage and sacrifice, he was awarded both the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

His granddaughter, Megan (McGathey) Krug, and her husband Timothy have chosen to sponsor this day (his birthday) in his memory. Through their sponsorship, they celebrate his life, honor his legacy, and keep his story alive. We at Hero's Rest and Shalam Ministries are blessed to stand with them in commemorating his extraordinary service to this nation!

Q. "Why do first responders need retreats?"

A. Because they spend their lives running toward the things most of us run away from.

They see things most people will never see. They experience things most people will never experience. And then, many times, they are expected to go home, get some sleep, and show up for work the next day like everything is fine.

But it isn't always fine.

First responders need a place where they can step away from the job for a little while. A place where they can breathe, spend time outdoors, reconnect with their families, and be around people who understand what they carry.

That's why we're building Hero's Rest. To create that plac for our nation's greatest heroes

We are so grateful for our volunteers at Hero’s Rest! 💪 In the first half of this year we have had more volunteers than in all of 2025!! 🎉 People are excited to support first responders however they can - from donating skilled labor to just dragging branches out of new campsites. 🎉 Happy Birthday, Karen Jackson! ❤️

Every year, Karen celebrates her birthday by blessing others! For YEARS, Karen has been sponsoring her birthday at Hero's Rest and once again she is celebrating by sponsoring - not just her birthday but her entire birthday weekend. 🥳She's also celebrating by hosting a Facebook fundraiser to support first responders, veterans, and their families!!

Karen has been part of this ministry since the beginning. ❤️She doesn't just give financially—she faithfully prays for us, sends handwritten cards filled with Scripture and encouragement, and reminds us month after month that we're not serving alone. Karen, thank you for believing in this mission and for sharing your birthday with us once again. Your generosity, encouragement, and prayers have helped carry this ministry through both exciting seasons and challenging ones. We hope you have a wonderful birthday, and we pray God blesses you in the coming year as richly as you've blessed so many others.

Happy birthday America!! You are a nation of free thinkers, frontiersman, entrepreneurs, hard workers, innovators, and above all lovers of freedom! We are proud to call this land our home. We are grateful for the men and women who have died defending our freedom over the last two and a half centuries. We are honored to be building something for our nation's heroes, right here in the heart of america. But today, we take a break and celebrate the truly unique, awesome, wonderful, greatest nation in the world - the United States of America! Happy Independence Day everyone!!
