Tom Murphy came to Rodanthe on Hatteras Island in 1986 along with his spouse, Mary Helen Goodloe-Murphy, after vacationing here for many years. They quickly joined the Chicamacomico Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department as firefighters. Tom was one of four original members of the department’s water rescue team and served for many years as the chaplain for the department. Having served our department and community for 34 years, he will greatly be missed.

Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo beach goers take notice!

MODERATE RIP CURRENT risk for our beaches. Enjoy the beach but remember the risk. Stop the Water Rescue on patrol if you have any questions. Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of Low Tide (8:26am).

If caught in a rip current remain calm, do not panic. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline with the long shore current. When out of the outflowing rip current, swim back to shore. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. It is always safer to use flotation in the ocean.

Passing thunderstorms...stay tuned to the radar. When thunder roars stay in doors.

Waves 3-4ft
Water Temp 64(pier)
Wind: WSW 10mph
SW-SSE 5-15mph forecasted

Low Tide 8:26am, 8:45p
High Tide 2:39pm

Enjoy the beach! Know your limits, don’t swim alone, know your location and if help is needed call 911!
