Registration for the Rockville Science Center's fall classes is live! We have a wide array of STEM programs available for all ages from 4 - 94. From afterschool and homeschool programs to Junior Scientist classes for the littlest learners (ages 4-6) and some fun Saturday classes for teens and adults, there truly is something for everyone. Check out the options (robotics, DNA, python programming, engineering, 3D printing, soap making, amateur radio licensing, and tons of other exciting STEM topics) and get started today!

The recognitions keep on coming! Congratulations to Tom and Beth May, mentors for RSC's Explorer Post 1010 Drone Team, on being awarded the Gardner Chambliss Team Manager Award for 2026. This award comes on the back of the team they mentor, "Some Assembly Required," earning their 3rd consecutive national championship at the UAS4STEM competition in Oshkosh, WI.

We feel incredibly lucky to have amazing volunteers like Tom and Beth (pictured on the far right and 3rd from left), who have dedicated so much of their time to mentoring students in STEM, leadership, and life skills. Our Makerspace volunteers had a great day helping out at the Fix-It Clinic today! Sponsored by the Montgomery County Dept. of Environmental Protection, the event provided an opportunity for residents to get broken household items fixed rather than adding them to landfills. The event space at the Gaithersburg Library was positively humming with the sounds of all types of repairs to items such as electronics, small appliances, furniture, and clothing. The best sound of all though was the frequent chime followed by the cheers of the crowd marking another item fixed and given a new lease on life! What a great way to save our environment and help teach the community valuable skills.

Our Science Tuesday Lecture Series is journeying back in history this month! Join Dr. Sethanne Howard on Tuesday, August 11, 1:00 - 2:00 PM, to learn about the capture of German submarine U-505 by the U.S. Navy on June 4, 1944. This critical moment in WW-2 history marked the first enemy warship seized at sea by the U.S. since the War of 1812. Dr. Howard will have some fascinating stories to share that have been passed down from her father's personal experience with this event. All are welcome!

A huge congratulations to Explorer Post 1010's drone team for earning first place in the advanced division of the National UAS4STEM championship. This marks the third consecutive year our "Some Assembly Required" team has brought home the trophy! The team, comprised of high school students, works throughout the school year to design, build, program, and fly a quad-copter drone.. The season culminates in Oshkosh, WI where the top teams in the country compete in a series of intricate missions to claim the top prize of champion. The Rockville Science Center is incredibly proud of these students and their mentors. Well done!!

Don't throw away that chair with a wobbly leg or toss your favorite shirt just because the buttons fell off. Bring them to the Fix-It Clinic at the Gaithersburg Library on Saturday, August 8. Many of the makers from the Rockville Makerspace & Tool Library will be on hand for this event which is organized by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection as a way to reduce waste, build practical skills, and breathe new life into the items you already own.

Volunteers will be on hand to help with electronics (radios, printers, computers), household items, small appliances, clothing/ textiles, bicycles, jewelry, and knife sharpening. Sign up for a time slot is required for all repairs except for knife sharpening, which is walk-in only with a limit of two items. Don't delay - slots are filling FAST!

Kids ages 8-13 are invited to join us at the Rockville Makerspace for an exciting new class that will teach them the skills to bring their ideas to life through the 3D printing process! Sign up for our Character Art & 3D Printing class and learn how to take your design concept to an actual 3D printed custom character. The class runs on Fridays, 5:00-7:00 PM, from August 7-28 (4 sessions). No experience is necessary. Just bring your ideas and we'll help you take it from there! The Rockville Science Center invites you to tune in on Zoom and join the conversation on the always intriguing topic of "The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence." Our speaker, Richard Colarco, will provide a little history of the search and talk about some of the assumptions and possibilities scientists are working with. Come learn about signal "leakage," the Drake Equation, and the WOW! signal. Richard Colarco, is currently the treasurer and a docent at the National Capital Radio and Television Museum. He has a BS in physics, and advanced degrees in operations research and education. He directed airborne reconnaissance operations in Korea, and was deputy commander of the Space Surveillance Network.
