The sign came down last weekend marking the conclusion of the Rockville Science Center's tenure in Town Square (FYI, our Makerspace and Tool Library remains at 33F Maryland Ave). It's been a great six years in this space, serving community members of all ages with opportunities for hands-on STEM learning, but have no fear...the Rockville Science Center isn't going away, we're simply relocating!

This summer you can find us at our temporary space (130 Rollins Ave, Suite F-2, Rockville, MD 20852) where we'll be holding nine weeks of summer camp for children ages 7-12. Other programs for adults, including our online lecture series, Explorations! field trips, and Amateur Radio Group will continue uninterrupted.

We hope to be able to share news of our next exciting chapter later this summer! In the meantime, look for opportunities to engage and learn in our newsletter, on our website, and on social media.

Robotics, 3D printing, plate tectonics, DNA extraction, computer programming, glowing rocks, autonomous cars, chemical rockets...the world of science and technology is huge, always changing, and definitely something to get excited about! Summer provides an amazing opportunity for children to close the textbooks and experience the rewards of hands-on learning. At the Rockville Science Center STEM camps, children not only explore a wide variety of STEM topics through fun hands-on projects, they will also discover how to think like a scientist, solve problems, work as a team, and tackle challenging tasks with confidence - skills that will serve them well their whole lives!

So, get out of the heat this summer and join us at our new camp location for the summer of 2026: 130 Rollins Ave, Rockville MD 20852. We're hitting the road again in June! This time we're headed to College Park, MD, home of the University of Maryland, for a tour of UMD's Radiation Facility, part of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Come learn about the research that takes place at this interdisciplinary facility as well as the specialized equipment that is used by researchers including one of 48 U.S. Training or Research Reactors. Often called non-power reactors, these are nuclear reactors that are not used for the production of electricity, but instead support research and educational needs for students, researchers and professionals.

Tickets for the tour are free, but pre-registration is required on RSC's website: https://www.rockvillesciencecenter.org/event-details-registration/explorations-field-trip-12

The Rockville Science Center invites you to join us for one or both of our upcoming online lectures as we dive into history with a look at two disasters: the Chernobyl explosion (Rockville Science Tuesday: June 9) and the recent collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge following impact from a container ship (Rockville Science Cafe: June 16). Our speakers will provide insight into what happened and discuss steps that could (or have been) taken to avoid similar tragedies in the future. Come be part of these sure-to-be fascinating discussions. All are welcome to tune in on Zoom!

Want to keep your child's brain active this summer? The Rockville Science Center still has space available for our summer STEM camps. Kids ages 7-12 can join us for a full week of STEM learning and fun. Each week focuses on two topics ranging from robotics and geology to life sciences and coding (age varies by program). Camp will take place at 130 Rollins Ave, Rockville, which offers plenty of free parking for easy drop off and pick up. We are grateful to Academic Pathways for the opportunity to partner with them and utilize this bright beautiful space while we search for a new home for the Rockville Science Center. And, as always, you get a 10% discount when registering siblings or for multiple weeks. Need-based scholarships (50% off) are available too. Let's make 2026 the summer of STEM!

We are excited to welcome Bruce Cranford back to the Rockville Science Cafe for our May presentation. Bruce will be sharing about how physics and astronomy help us understand the world around us. If you've ever looked into the sky and wondered about what you are seeing (or not seeing), this talk should help shed some light on it. In his previous presentation Bruce talked about Electromagnetic Radiation (light), the eyes, and other detectors. This time around, Bruce will describe phenomena that affect Electromagnetic Radiation (light) and Gravitational Waves. Bruce is a Licensed Professional Engineer and currently serving as a docent at the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center. Regardless of whether you caught his first talk, we hope you'll join us on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 PM on Zoom. All are welcome!
