(Girls' Night Out by Shawn Yancy) is a 501(c)(3) organization, working to improve the lives of women and children in need. Washington DC News anchor, Shawn Yancy founded Girls' Night Out by Shawn Yancy in 2010 as a way to help empower & promote the well being of women & children in need. What started as a get together with a few girlfriends in her living room turned into annual fundraising benefits to further the organization's mission. In 2019 Girls' Night Out by Shawn Yancy became a 501(c)(3) organization with the same mission to improve and empower the lives of women and children in need.

For a student mother, the cost of college reaches far beyond tuition.

• Nearly 9 in 10 single mothers in college have low incomes.
• More than one-third of single-parent undergraduates face food insecurity.
• Student parents who pay for housing spend an average of 48% more than students without children.

These are some of the challenges young mothers carry while raising their children, working and pursuing their degrees.

Through the GFWC Young Scholars Fund, we provide scholarships and mentoring to help young mothers stay on track and build stronger futures for their families.

💕 We’re proud to celebrate our founder, Shawn Yancy, named one of Bethesda Magazine’s 2026 Women Who Inspire.

The honor recognizes women whose work, leadership and dedication are making a difference in our community.

For Shawn, that work is deeply personal.

As a young student parent, she balanced motherhood, college and building a future for her family. Years later, her own experience helped inspire GFWC’s Young Scholars Program, created to help young mothers stay on track toward earning their college degrees through scholarships, mentorship and support.

That journey continues to shape the work we do today.

💕Meet our 2026 GFWC Young Scholar, Keimora Williams.

Keimora is a student parent at Trinity Washington University, pursuing a B.A. in Elementary Education while raising her son and working toward her goal of becoming an elementary educator.

With a 3.7 GPA and Dean’s List recognition, she is exactly the kind of student our Young Scholars Program was created to support.

Through scholarships, mentoring and resources, GWC helps student parents stay on track toward earning their degrees and building stronger futures for their families.

Happy Mother’s Day to every woman who pours love, strength, wisdom, comfort, and care into the lives of others.

GFWC Founder, Shawn Yancy:

“Today, we celebrate the mothers raising children, the grandmothers holding generations together, the bonus moms, the godmothers, the aunties, the mentors, and the women who show up every day with open hearts and steady hands.

We honor the women who are longing to become mothers, those carrying the quiet ache of loss, and those navigating this day while missing their own mothers.

We celebrate the women nurturing dreams, building businesses, creating art, leading communities, caring for family, and giving life to the people and passions around them.

Motherhood shows up in so many beautiful forms. It lives in sacrifice, patience, protection, encouragement, compassion, and unconditional love.

That’s also why supporting young mothers through the Young Scholars Fund at The Giving Foundation for Women & Children means so much to me. So many young women are working to raise children, pursue an education, and build a better future for their families all at the same time. 💕 Today we celebrate the strength,love, and resilience of mothers everywhere.

GFWC Board Member, Lorraine Altschuler:

“Motherhood has been the greatest privilege and joy of my life. Watching my boys, Evan and Sam, grow into kind, capable, successful men has filled my heart in ways I could never have imagined. While they no longer live nearby, every moment we spend together is cherished, and I’m endlessly grateful for the bond we share.

I know how fortunate I am. Not every mother has the support, opportunities, or stability that allow children to thrive and dream freely. That is one of the reasons the mission of the Giving Foundation for Women & Children is so meaningful to me. Every mother deserves hope, and every child deserves the chance to build a bright future.

As I reflect on motherhood, I also think about my own mother — the example she continues to set through her love, strength, generosity, and unwavering presence in our family. If I can leave even a fraction of the legacy she is leaving, I will be over the moon.

Being a mother has taught me that the most meaningful legacy we leave is not measured in accomplishments, but in love, compassion, and the lives we help lift along the way.”

💕 Mother’s Make the world go round!

GFWC Board Member, Pam Sofola:

“It is truly a blessing to be called “Mum.” I remember when the boys were born; I could hardly believe that my husband and I were now responsible for the life of another human being. Yet the journey has been such a joyful one, and it continues to bring me happiness every single day. The closeness we share with our boys is truly amazing.

The most rewarding part of being a mother is seeing how our hard work has paid off and witnessing the wonderful young men our children have become. Over the past 26 years, my husband and I have nurtured them and poured our hearts into raising them. From birth, it was always a priority for us to instill strong moral values and teach them the importance of being good citizens.

As the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” To me, this means a lifelong commitment to building character, faith, and discipline. Even though the boys are now young adults, I still pour into them every chance I get.

I am so proud to be their mother and give God all the glory for what they have achieved so far in life as they continue pursuing their professional education to become future doctors, serving humanity and helping to save lives. This to me is the true joy of being a mother.

My experiences as a mother have also inspired my passion for serving others beyond my own family. As a board member of The Giving Foundation for Women and Children, I have the opportunity to support and uplift women and children in need, which is something very close to my heart. Motherhood has taught me the importance of compassion, guidance, sacrifice, and encouragement, and these values continue to shape the way I serve my community. Being able to make a positive difference in the lives of others is truly fulfilling and an extension of the love and care I have always poured into my own children.

I thank God for the privilege of motherhood and for the opportunity to be a blessing to others by working with the GFWC.”
