The power of partnership is incredible. ❤️

At The Landing MN, we know that no single organization can solve homelessness alone. It takes a community of nonprofits, agencies, and partners working together to help our unhoused neighbors navigate a complex system and access the support they need.

One partnership we've intentionally grown this year is with Workforce Development, Inc. (WDI), located in the Heintz Center in Rochester. WDI offers valuable employment resources, including resume assistance, job search support, career services, and even a clothing closet to help individuals prepare for interviews.

Earlier this summer, Tonya from WDI visited The Landing MN for a tour and conversation about how our organizations could work more closely together. That meeting sparked several exciting opportunities. Our Director of Social Services was invited to present at WDI Rochester’s recent staff meeting so their team could learn more about our mission and the services we provide. After hearing about our needs, the WDI team also organized a food drive to help stock our shelves when supplies were running low.

☕❤️ Great coffee. A great cause. A partnership we're so thankful for.

Just over a year ago, Trail Creek Coffee Roasters welcomed new owners, Alec and Ashley McGinn. We were excited to learn they chose to continue the partnership started by the previous owners by keeping The Landing Roast available — and continuing to support The Landing MN.

After visiting us to learn more about our mission, Alec and Ashley reaffirmed their commitment to serving both great coffee and their community. As a family-owned business based in Kasson, they understand the importance of giving back, and we're incredibly grateful for their support.

You can support both Trail Creek Coffee and The Landing MN by purchasing The Landing Roast at Trail Creek Coffee Roasters in Kasson or at St. James Coffee in Rochester. A portion of every purchase is donated back to support our mission and the unhoused guests we serve.

Thank you, Trail Creek Coffee, for investing in our community — one cup at a time. ☕💙

A huge thank you to MN 97.5 for hosting another fantastic golf event at Northern Hills Golf Course! While the tournament had to be rescheduled a few weeks ago due to rain, it turned out to be well worth the wait. We were treated to beautiful weather, a wonderful lunch, and—most importantly—an incredible group of golfers who came together to support our community and the work of The Landing MN.

Community events like these make a real difference. Every team that registered, every sponsor who gave, and every volunteer who helped make the day possible is helping ensure that our unhoused neighbors have access to meals, showers, laundry, medical care, social services, and a welcoming place to turn every single day.

A special thank you to Tom Kadlec and Rochester Indoor Golf Center for sponsoring this event and helping make it such a success. Also, a thank you to Sterling State Bank for donating the Blackstone to raise money for us during the putting contest. We are so grateful for your partnership and your commitment to making our community stronger.

Thank you to everyone who participated—we couldn't do this work without you! ❤️⛳

There is a line we walk every single day at The Landing MN.

On one side is a person who has nowhere else to go.

On the other is a neighborhood that deserves to feel safe, clean, welcoming, and cared for.

We believe we have a responsibility to both.

And some days, that line is incredibly hard to walk.

We welcome people whom much of the world has stopped welcoming. People carrying everything they own. People living with untreated illness, addiction, trauma, mental illness, poverty, and sometimes behaviors that are difficult, disruptive, or uncomfortable.

We feed them. We learn their names. We wash their clothes. We give them a place to shower and use a bathroom. We treat wounds. We help replace IDs. We connect people to benefits, employment, treatment, medical care, and housing.

We remind them that their lives still matter.

And then, sometimes in the very same hour, we have to tell someone:

You cannot behave that way here.

You cannot threaten someone.

You cannot leave your belongings there.

You cannot disrupt the businesses around us.

You may not be able to come back today.

That is the line.

Compassion without accountability doesn't serve our community.

But accountability without compassion doesn't solve homelessness, either.

So every day, our staff stand in that uncomfortable space between the two.

They pick up litter outside our building. They monitor our property. They redirect behavior. They de-escalate conflicts. They call for help when something is beyond what we can safely handle.

Then they walk back through our doors and help someone fill out a housing application.

That is homelessness work.

And there is something else we desperately want our community to understand:

The Landing MN did not bring homelessness to downtown Rochester.

The people who walk through our doors were already here.

Without The Landing MN, they do not disappear.

They still need somewhere to spend the day.

They still need a bathroom.

They still get hungry.

Their clothes still need washing.

Their wounds still need treatment.

Their mental illness doesn't disappear.

Their addiction doesn't disappear.

Their need for housing doesn't disappear.

What disappears is the place specifically designed to help address those things.

Instead of being inside our professionally staffed center, people would spend more of their days in parks, libraries, parking ramps, sidewalks, business entryways, and other public spaces.

That isn't better for people experiencing homelessness.

And it isn't better for the rest of Rochester.

So yes, we care deeply about the person sleeping outside tonight.

We also care about the person unlocking their business tomorrow morning.

We care about the family walking downtown.

We care about our neighbors.

We care about first responders.

We care about taxpayers.

We care about the people who work around us.

And, most importantly, we care about the person who has absolutely nowhere else to be.

Those commitments are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, we believe our community needs organizations willing to hold all of them at once.

We won't always get it perfect. Homelessness is complicated, human beings are complicated, and some days are incredibly difficult.

But our answer cannot be to move suffering somewhere we don't have to look at it.

Our answer has to be to confront it, manage its impact responsibly, and help people move beyond it.

Being a good neighbor isn't pretending homelessness doesn't exist.

It's caring enough about every one of our neighbors—housed and unhoused—to do the difficult work of addressing it.

That's the line we walk.

Every day.

And we're proud to keep walking it.

🎉 Happy belated birthday to Beamish! 🎂🐾

For more than a year now, Beamish the therapy dachshund and his handler, Dixie, have been regular visitors at The Landing MN, bringing a little extra comfort, conversation, and plenty of cuddles to our day center.

Whether he’s greeting a familiar face, sitting patiently for some attention, or simply being his adorable little self, Beamish has a special way of brightening the day for the people who walk through our doors. His visits are a wonderful reminder that sometimes, a little companionship can mean a lot.

And now, our favorite little therapy dog has reached a pretty big milestone: Beamish is 10 years old! 🥳

Help us wish Beamish a very happy (belated) birthday and thank him — and Dixie — for all the warmth, joy, and tail wags they’ve brought to The Landing MN over the past year. ❤️

Happy 10th, Beamish! We’re so glad you’re part of the Landing family. 🐶

The Landing MN is proud to recognize one of our newest board members, Cat Hanson, whose leadership and compassion are already making a meaningful impact.

As an attorney with the Public Defender's Office, Cat brings valuable legal expertise to our board. Beyond volunteering her time in board governance, she also helped launch a monthly event, Defender Fridays, a partnership that connects clients at The Landing MN directly with staff from the Public Defender's Office.

Through Defender Fridays, public defenders meet clients where they are—building trust, answering questions, identifying open cases - or outstanding warrants, assisting with public defender applications, and connecting individuals with legal resources. By working alongside The Landing MN staff, they are able to provide more holistic support to people navigating legal challenges.

Many of the cases they encounter are poverty-related offenses, misdemeanors, such as theft, trespass, or traffic violations. Unhoused individuals face unique organizational challenges when navigating the criminal justice system. For example, missing a court date can happen when someone is focused on basic survival—finding a safe place to sleep, securing a meal, or coping with the daily effects of trauma and crisis.

As Cat shared, "Given the right set of circumstances, anyone can be in the shoes of our clients! Crime doesn't happen in a vacuum. Factors like poverty, substance use disorder, mental health challenges, and generational trauma often shape the choices people have, and ultimately the charges they may face."

A huge thank you to Cat for your time, talents and compassion.

Our Executive Director, Alex Hurlebaus, shares about connection and the great efforts through Any Path Home:

This year we made the decision to center our work around the word connection, and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what that word looks like beyond our walls.

For me, one of the clearest examples is the work happening through Any Path Home.

I have the privilege of serving on the Any Path Home Leadership Council and participating in the Public Spaces Workgroup. Through that work, I get to sit alongside people who approach homelessness from very different perspectives—service providers, local government, law enforcement, businesses, healthcare partners, people with lived experience, and others who care deeply about our community.

We don’t always come to the table seeing the problem the same way. And I actually think that’s important.

Connection doesn’t require us to agree on everything. It requires us to keep showing up, listening to one another, and staying focused on what we’re trying to accomplish together.

The work around homelessness—especially when it intersects with public spaces—is complicated. There isn’t one organization, program, or person who can solve it. If we want homelessness in our community to be rare, brief, and nonrecurring, it takes a coordinated response and a willingness to move beyond our individual lanes.

That’s one of the things I appreciate about Any Path Home. We’re not just talking about collaboration. We’re working to build the relationships, shared strategies, and accountability necessary to actually do it.

And The Landing has a meaningful role at that table.

As Executive Director, I’m proud of that. But I’m also reminded that connection is a practice, not just a value. It happens every time we choose to pick up the phone, invite another voice into the conversation, listen before responding, or ask, “How can we do this better together?”

So that’s my check-in—and maybe my challenge to you:

Where could a little more connection make a difference in your corner of our community?

Because none of us ends homelessness alone.

We find the path forward together.
