Did you know? American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete language with its own grammar, sentence structure, and rules just like spoken languages.

ASL is not simply English translated into hand movements. It is a visual language that uses handshapes, facial expressions, body movements, and space to communicate meaning.

Like any language, ASL has its own history, culture, and community. For many Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, ASL is an important part of identity, connection, and communication.

Organizations such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) offer online directories to help connect individuals and organizations with qualified sign language interpreters. They also provide helpful guidance and resources on working with professional interpreters.
