A well-deserved honor for Mitch Goplen! Mitch has played an instrumental role in our hospital project, and we’re nearing the finish line on a beautiful, functional facility thanks in large part to his partnership and dedication. What does the NFL, a dental practice, trucking company, railroad company, and building a hospital from the ground up all have in common? Corte McGuffey. He played quarterback in two NCAA Division II National Championships, had a brief career in the NFL and XFL, became a Dentist, and eventually moved back to Riverton, WY. There, he ran a trucking company (BTI) and a short line railroad company (Wyoming Railroad) where it occurred to him that no babies had been born there in nearly 10 years. With a glaring need for better hospital services, Corte’s “project of a lifetime” was born. Now, 8 years later, RiverPeak Health, a non-profit hospital and clinic will start seeing patients on January 12th, 2027. RiverPeak Health is thrilled to announce that Dr. Liz Baumgartner will be joining our medical staff, bringing a unique combination of family medicine and emergency medicine training to the team.

Dr. Baumgartner has intentionally built her career around providing comprehensive care to rural communities. She chose RiverPeak Health because she was inspired by the community’s passion to expand access to high-quality care locally.

Dr. Baumgartner completed her family medicine residency in New Hampshire. During her residency, she discovered her passion for emergency medicine and subsequently pursued extensive additional experience in emergency and acute care. Following her residency, she completed an emergency medicine fellowship in Wisconsin. She is board-certified in family medicine and is pursuing additional board certification in emergency medicine.

Her commitment to rural medicine began well before completing her physician training. While attending the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, she participated in research on rural and underserved communities. She also worked alongside a nurse practitioner providing home-based care to isolated and vulnerable older adults in rural Vermont, where she is from.

Throughout her training, Dr. Baumgartner has demonstrated a strong commitment to education and service. She has served as clinical adjunct faculty for family medicine residents and contributed to public health initiatives. Her community involvement includes health education for refugee populations and international medical relief work.

Dr. Baumgartner also has a strong connection to the outdoors and wilderness medicine. Before medical school, she worked as a ski patrol dispatcher at Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont, which is where her love for the outdoors and skiing was born. Outside of work, if she is not home spending time with her pets or garden, you may find her out hiking, camping, skiing, or kayaking. Animal lovers will also appreciate that she regularly volunteers with shelters and feline trap, neuter, and return programs.

It’s official! RiverPeak Health will open its new hospital and clinic to patients on January 12, 2027.

As preparations continue for RiverPeak Health’s opening, we’re adding leaders who will help establish the services and operations that support the hospital every day. Through our partnership with Forefront, we are now accepting applications for an Integrated Facility Management (IFM) Director for Environmental Services (EVS) and Facilities Management (FM).

The IFM Director (EVS & FM) will oversee facility operations, environmental services, safety programs, and regulatory readiness across the campus. This role will help develop the processes and standards needed to support a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Working with hospital leadership and operational teams, this position will oversee facility planning, vendor relationships, emergency preparedness, and operational performance. The role will help prepare RiverPeak Health to meet the community’s needs from day one.

RiverPeak Health is excited to announce that Dr. Matthew Widmer will be joining our medical staff in the summer of 2027 following the completion of his emergency medicine residency at Virginia Tech-Carilion in Roanoke, Virginia. In addition to a love for the ER, he brings additional experience in health systems and public health as well as a passion for wilderness medicine and outdoor leadership.

Prior to studying medicine, Dr. Widmer earned a Bachelor of Public Health and Master of Public Administration in nonprofit healthcare. His primary academic interest centers on complex systems thinking in population health, especially in low-resource settings. He earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Touro University Nevada.

At the Virginia Tech-Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency, Dr. Widmer trained in a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving 22 counties in rural Appalachia. During residency, his academic work included presentations at the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine on transfer criteria for spinal fractures and at the Wilderness Medical Society on managing medical risk in backcountry guiding. He served in hospital quality improvement through refining the trauma alert process and improving sepsis compliance.

Dr. Widmer’s journey into medicine began during a NOLS Wilderness First Responder course, which he took while working as a climbing and backpacking guide in the mountains and desert canyons of Utah. He has an enduring obsession with backcountry travel by foot, rope, paddle, and ski. He and his wife enjoy sharing these experiences with their four children. They are thrilled to plant deep roots in Fremont County.

Dr. Widmer chose RiverPeak for the impressive community and for the opportunity to help build a model rural healthcare system from the ground up.

The RiverPeak Health team was proud to present our work on restoring maternity care in Riverton and contribute to conversations focused on innovation, partnership, and sustainable solutions for Wyoming families.
