Disability advocates have long warned that segregation and institutionalization are not care — they are forms of control that often strip people of dignity, autonomy, and community.

Policies that criminalize unhoused individuals or push people with disabilities into forced treatment ignore the real issues: lack of affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and voluntary community-based support systems.

Organizations like [ACLU](https://www.aclu.org?utm_source=chatgpt.com) continue to emphasize that people deserve access to safe housing, mental health care, and evidence-based services rooted in compassion and choice — not punishment or isolation.

True support means building inclusive communities where disabled people can live safely, independently, and with dignity.

A student once described as “nonverbal” and diagnosed with level 3 autism has now graduated summa cm laude 🎓

Stories like this are a reminder that autistic individuals are far more capable than the limits others place on them. Growth happens in different ways, on different timelines, and success does not look the same for everyone.

Every autistic child deserves support, belief, opportunities, and a community that sees their potential beyond a diagnosis 💙

Bullying of autistic children doesn’t always look obvious. Sometimes it’s being left out on purpose, becoming the target of “harmless jokes,” being manipulated by peers, or watching friendships quietly get turned against them.

These experiences can deeply affect a child’s confidence, mental health, sense of safety, and ability to trust others.

Every form of bullying deserves attention, support, and action. Inclusion means creating environments where autistic children feel respected, protected, and genuinely accepted for who they are.

An unforgettable night of inclusion, joy, and celebration brought students, families, volunteers, and community members together for the annual “Amelia’s Prom,” a special prom experience designed for students with disabilities and special needs throughout the community.

The evening featured a glamorous red-carpet welcome, dinner, music, dancing, and activities that created a prom night where every student felt celebrated, included, and valued. What began years ago as a student-led effort has grown into a cherished community tradition that now impacts hundreds of students and families each year.

The event continues to thrive thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers, local businesses, sponsors, and organizations who help provide decorations, food, gifts, and resources to make the experience completely accessible and memorable for all who attend.

Named in honor of Amelia Bruce, the prom serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of community, compassion, and creating spaces where every student has the opportunity to shine.

Luke is a gestalt language processor, which means he learns language in scripts, phrases, and chunks instead of single words. He’s always had a song in his heart. We heard him sing long before we ever heard conversational language from him. There’s something incredibly moving about hearing him sing “Part of Your World.” The meaning behind those lyrics is not lost on me. I will never take for granted the gift of hearing his voice in any form. 💙

For years, parents — especially mothers — were unfairly blamed for their child’s autism. A harmful belief called the “refrigerator mother theory” claimed autism was caused by cold or unloving parenting. Families carried guilt and stigma because of misinformation, not science.

In 1964, Dr. Bernard Rimland, a psychologist and father of an autistic son, challenged that narrative. Through research, evidence, and lived experience, he published *Infantile Autism*, helping prove that autism is neurological — not caused by parenting. His work helped change the conversation around autism worldwide and gave countless families validation and hope.

Dr. Rimland later founded the Autism Research Institute and dedicated his life to advancing autism understanding and advocacy. His legacy reminds us how powerful truth, research, and parent advocacy can be.

Awareness matters. Acceptance matters. Families deserve support — never blame. 💙
