Thank you to all who helped buy food from our Walmart Wishlist to help support all refugees HNB serves who lost their SNAP benefits. We are so close to covering all the food for a month for the 45 families we serve!

So please help us with one last push to buy up the remaining oil, rice, lentils, dried beans and pasta. Shop today: https://www.walmart.com/registry/RR/e78194b9-a1ac-4ea2-b94d-d7912de228d1

It means a lot that invited Homes Not Borders to be part of their World Refugee Day event, built around the theme of food and resilience (so apropos for our FAR program!) 🍲

Because a meal is never just a meal. It's the smell, tastes, and texture of the familiar and of the country lost, the table where a family rebuilds after everything else has changed. For refugees starting over in a new country, food is memory, comfort, and resilience all at once.

Thank you, Accenture, for making space for these stories — because when someone tells you their own story, in their own words, something shifts. A stranger becomes a neighbor. Distance becomes empathy.

Happy World Refugee Day. 🌍

This World Refugee Day (June 20th), refugee families in our community our facing a real gap. 🌍
Federal SNAP cuts stripped food benefits from refugees without green cards — which they can't even apply for in their first year here (and BTW the feds are refusing to process them rn so it's a Catch 22). So Homes Not Borders stepped in. Last month, our Food Assistance for Refugees program fed 47 families: 197 people.
Help us keep rice, flour, lentils, and oil on their tables. Link below to buy staple foods or shop our Walmart Wishlist. đź›’

Our "queen of cats" storyteller, Amandine, uses the metaphor of leaving a beloved pet for leaving her home country forever after it passed a restrictive anti-LGBTQ+ law when she was 12 years old. Her parents told her that she was going on vacation for the summer at her aunt's house in France but then she never came back. So many thanks to Maret School for hosting Amandine, Homes Not Borders and making space for her story!

Oden is a bit shy, but liked the bed Homes Not Borders set up for him. He, his sister, mom and dad are from Ukraine and needed furniture to truly feel at home.

One of the cuter set of donors we've met were the kind, curious kids at Monocacy Elementary School, at the Celebration. These kids had a great experience with , which provides kids with the learning experiences and tools for a lifetime of meaningful and impactful giving. After researching area nonprofits, the kids chose Homes Not Borders to receive a $1000 grant from the Giving Square. It's so awesome to teach kids to be philanthropists at such a young age and we are honored that they recognized the need in the refugee community of the DMV these days. Way to go Monocacy and TYSM to The Giving Square!
