Swipe to watch us renovate!

We're deeply grateful to the City of Richmond for providing us with the beautiful building CDP calls home! As we continue to steward this incredible space, we were thrilled to be able to give it a refresh. Thanks to the support of the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, the Community Foundation, and Acoustics and Interior Construction, Inc., renovations are underway. With new floors, drywall, and window treatments, our building will be a stronger and even more welcoming place for East End families to gather.

As part of CDP’s celebration of , our team visited the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia! We were joined by David Harris, Jr. – CDP’s board Vice President and a nephew of the incredible activist-athlete, Arthur Ashe – for a tour of the Museum’s tribute to Ashe and the many exhibits that document the enduring legacy of the Black community in Richmond and beyond.

Alongside Metro Richmond Tennis Club and Richmond Tennis Association, Mr. Harris is a committed advocate for the accessibility of tennis, carrying on the lasting impact of Arthur Ashe. CDP is deeply grateful for his leadership on our board.

Thank you to the CDP team for your dedication to equitable mental health support for youth in – your work represents history in action.

Our in-school and after-school enrichment programs are led by trained mental health professionals and use an evidence-based curriculum to prevent bullying, substance use, and suspension or expulsion from school.

Through activities and discussions, youth cultivate critical competencies that promote : self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills.

Last year, leaders and representatives from 100% of the sites where we led programming – including public schools – requested that we return for another year due to the positive difference our counselors make on youth development.

A focus group of teachers and leaders from our partner organizations identified many demonstrable benefits of our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs; interviewees overwhelmingly cited improvements in school attendance, a decrease in bullying, and an increase in the use of conflict de-escalation practices among participating youth. Learn more about SEL at our website.

Today is ! Gifts of any size help CDP support youth mental health through our in-school and after-school programs. Here’s just one success story about a program participant from a CDP counselor:

"During our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) groups, I met a young person completing community service due to pending criminal charges. They shared openly that they had spent most of their life shaped by gangs, crime, and drugs. When asked what they needed to succeed, they responded with one word: ‘guidance.’ Recognizing the strength and resilience within this person, I invited them to participate in our SEL group and connected them with a mentoring program through a trusted community partner. Over time, this young person began to thrive by slowly building positive social support and seeing their own potential.

I recently saw them again while facilitating another SEL group. They shared that they had completed all required programs by the judge, had their charges dropped, and remained actively engaged with supportive people and programs that offered opportunities to enhance their future. Today, this person is back in school, maintaining high grades, pursuing sports, and actively participating in community programs. They have also become a source of inspiration for other youth.”

Thank you to the CDP team and our community of donors for ensuring youth have access to behavioral health services and emotional enrichment programming!
