Indeed, to God we belong and to Him we return.

It is with profound sorrow and deep reverence that we announce the passing of Zakia Miakhel Khan, a trailblazer and pillar of the Afghan community in Central Virginia.

As a founding leader of the Afghan Association of Central Virginia, Zakia helped countless families rebuild their lives. She mentored and supported hundreds of Afghan women and refugees, assisting them in finding employment, housing, food, and essential resources. Even as her health declined, and while relying on an oxygen tank, she continued to drive families to appointments and job interviews, attend board meetings, and serve her community with determination.

In the weeks before her passing, she called on the Afghan community to stay united and build a permanent community center to strengthen future generations. May the Almighty grant her Paradise and accept her lifelong service as sadaqah jariyah.

All friends and respected members of the community are kindly requested to attend the funeral and pray for the soul of the deceased. The funeral prayer (Janazah) will be held tomorrow after Dhuhr prayer at 1:30 PM at Masjid Yusuf.
Address: 8481 Hungary Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060. See images for additional information.

Salam, dear community members.

The Afghan Association of Central Virginia is actively advocating on behalf of our community in response to recent federal immigration law changes. To do this effectively, we need to document the impact on real families.

If you or a family member has been affected by ICE enforcement, questioning, detention, monitoring, or fear of removal, we are asking you to share your experience with us as soon as possible.

Your story helps us advocate for safer, more informed policies.

Please email your name, contact information, and a brief description of what happened to [email protected].

This request is time-sensitive. All information will be handled with care and confidentiality.

New reporting highlights a growing crisis: Afghans who assisted U.S. missions — from interpreters to pilots — are now navigating halted visa processing, ICE enforcement, and the very real threat of deportation. This not only harms families but undermines U.S. credibility with allies across the world.
